Thomas Tuchel has made a bold selection decision by naming Noni Madueke in England's starting lineup for their World Cup opener against Croatia. The match takes place on Wednesday evening in Arlington, Texas, marking Tuchel's first taste of tournament football as England manager.
Fan Reactions to Madueke's Inclusion
The Arsenal winger's place in the squad had already been controversial, and doubts grew after he missed an open net in England's final warm-up match against Costa Rica. Social media erupted with criticism, with one fan posting: "England have Madueke in their starting lineup and they're expecting to win," accompanied by laughing emojis. Another commented: "Genuinely how does Madueke start for England? I know something something work rate, tracking back." A third added: "Would rather have an off-form Palmer or Foden instead of Madueke..."
Madueke's Confidence Ahead of Clash
Despite the backlash, Madueke remains confident. Speaking to talkSPORT in the USA, he said: "I think we built something really special, especially in the first camp in September. And then obviously I was watching from home, October and November, injured. I could see the spirit even on the pitch."
He added: "I feel like we definitely built something that is lasting and we're going to use that for this tournament. The focal point with us at Arsenal this season was selflessness and being together. Chipping in and all working hard and pulling in the same direction."
Madueke emphasized the importance of teamwork: "There's elements of that in this team as well. I feel like in these types of tournaments you need that selfless approach. It doesn't matter who's in the limelight, who's shining as long as we all win."
