The Greater London Authority's 'Cool Spaces' interactive map has been unveiled as London braces for record-breaking temperatures of up to 39C this week. The map, last year's database updated for the current heatwave, lists libraries, community centres, sports centres, and religious spaces where residents can escape the scorching heat. Drinking water stations are also signposted to help Londoners stay hydrated.
Record-Breaking Heat Forecast
London is set to experience its hottest recorded week in June, with temperatures soaring to 37C on Tuesday and peaking at 39C on Wednesday. This follows the UK's hottest-ever May day, when 35.1C was recorded at Kew Gardens. The heatwave has prompted extreme heat warnings from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).
Purpose of the Cool Spaces Map
The GLA map aims to reduce health risks from hot weather by offering shelter from the sun. According to Dr Anya Gopfert, consultant in health protection at UKHSA, “even moderate heat can lead to serious health problems, especially for older people and those with certain health conditions.” The map is not a substitute for medical care; those affected should seek medical advice as usual.
Indoor Temperatures and Vulnerable Groups
Forecasts suggest indoor temperatures in London homes could reach 40C during the heatwave. The cool spaces can also be used if homes become uncomfortably warm. Dr Gopfert emphasised checking on vulnerable friends, family, and neighbours to ensure they follow necessary advice.
