With the UK facing a scorching week and temperatures potentially reaching 40C, the Met Office has issued a rare red 'risk to life' alert for parts of the country. The red alert applies to the West Midlands, Wales, South West England, London, South East England, the east of England and East Midlands, effective from 9am on Wednesday, June 24, until 9pm on Thursday, June 25. An amber warning is in place for Greater Manchester, where temperatures are forecast to peak at 37C on Thursday afternoon.
Why Keeping Cool Matters
During intense heat, maintaining a cool home is crucial to prevent overheating. This is especially important at night, as warm temperatures can affect internal body temperature and disrupt sleep. The British Red Cross warns that quality sleep is essential during a heatwave to help the body recover, regulate temperature, and maintain physical and mental health. Adequate sleep supports immune function, energy levels, and cardiovascular health, all vital for coping with extreme heat stress, particularly for vulnerable groups.
Four Techniques to Keep Your Home Cool
Unplug Appliances and Electronics
Plugged-in appliances and electronics generate heat, which can make your home feel warmer. To minimise additional heat sources, unplug devices when not in use. Avoid using too many lights, as they also produce heat, and ensure central heating is turned off. Consider avoiding kitchen appliances like ovens and hobs during the hottest parts of the day, or cook at cooler times to prevent heat buildup.
Close Curtains and Blinds
Sunlight streaming through windows can quickly heat up your home, even if windows are closed. Keep curtains, blinds, or shutters drawn during the heatwave to block the sun. If you lack these, covering windows with a bed sheet or towel can have a similar effect.
Keep Windows Closed
If the outside air is warmer than inside, keep windows closed to prevent warm air from entering. Check your local forecast to identify the hottest times of day and keep windows shut during those periods.
Use a Fan Wisely
Electric fans can help ventilate your home if the temperature is below 35C. Above that, fans may simply circulate warm air. Ceiling fans are effective at quickly cooling a room by pushing cooler air downward.
