The Met Office has issued a warning that 21 areas across the UK, including much of Scotland, will be hit by heavy rain within hours, with up to 8mm of rainfall per hour forecast in the worst-affected regions. This comes after a four-day amber heat warning for parts of England, where temperatures could reach 38C this week.
Scotland Braces for Downpours
According to Met Office maps, a large band of rain is set to sweep across almost all of Scotland by 12:45pm today. Glasgow is expected to bear the brunt of the miserable weather, with 2mm of rain forecast per hour. Edinburgh, the Highlands, Stirling, and Argyll and Bute will each see around 1mm of rain per hour, as reported by The Express.
Temperatures in Scotland will hover between 15C and 17C, a stark contrast to the 27C forecast for London and South Wales at midday.
Rain Spreads to Northern Ireland and England
The band of rain will also cover parts of Northern Ireland, with Antrim and Tyrone forecast 1mm of rain. By 7pm, the rain will intensify and spread across the South West and into the West Midlands. Gloucestershire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire, and Wiltshire will see a drenching with 4-8mm of rain forecast every hour, while Dorset will experience 1-2mm per hour.
Despite the rain, warm temperatures will persist in the South West, with 27C forecast at 7pm. Cardiff will see the warmest weather in the country at this time, with 29C, while London will be just three degrees cooler. Manchester will reach 27C, and Glasgow will be 22C.
Met Office Outlook
The Met Office's weather outlook for today states: "The best of the sunshine will be across the southeast, where it will feel increasingly hot and humid. Elsewhere, it will be rather cloudy, with a little showery rain possible at times, particularly across parts of Scotland and northern England."
