Travel journalist Molly Toolan has declared Seoul the must-visit city for 2026 after spending four months travelling across Asia. During her trip, she spent a week in South Korea's capital in April, a country she says had been on her radar but was often overshadowed by Japan. Instead of extending her two-week stay in Japan, she chose to explore Seoul, a city renowned for K-pop, skincare, and diverse neighbourhoods.
Perfect Timing and Weather
April proved to be an ideal time to visit, with temperatures hovering around 26°C most days, offering a comfortable climate. Toolan noted that the city did not feel heavily polluted compared to some other Asian cities, and from her base in Myeongdong, she enjoyed stunning panoramic views of the entire city.
Myeongdong, often described as the "beating heart of Seoul," is famous for its vibrant street food scene and numerous skincare shops. According to Toolan, Seoul is the best shopping destination she has ever visited. Within 24 hours, she had assembled an entirely new Korean skincare routine and was already seeing a glow.
Culinary Highlights
Korean BBQ was a standout experience, which she enjoyed several times in Myeongdong. She described it as one of the best meals of her entire four-month trip, with the novelty of grilling meat at the table never wearing off. She also sampled Korean corn dogs, Kal-guksu (a noodle soup), and Soju, a popular Korean alcoholic beverage.
Another neighbourhood she explored was Hongdae, known for its youth culture and shopping. There, street performers sing K-Pop while visitors sip bubble tea and browse clothing shops that offer items at a fraction of the price compared to the UK.
Historical Contrast at the DMZ
During her six-night stay, Toolan visited the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between North and South Korea. She learned about the Korean War from local guides, which provided a stark contrast to the vibrant, joyful atmosphere of Seoul. She called the experience eye-opening and incredible.
A Must-Visit Destination
Toolan highly recommends that travellers to Asia, especially those visiting Japan, add Seoul to their itinerary. She noted that it is only a one-hour flight from Tokyo, making it an easy addition. "I can't wait to go back!" she said.
