Andy Burnham Wins Makerfield By-Election in Decisive Victory
Andy Burnham Wins Makerfield By-Election Decisively

Andy Burnham has won the Makerfield by-election, securing a decisive victory as he returns to Parliament. The result, announced on Friday morning, saw the Labour and Co-operative Party candidate receive 24,927 votes, while Reform UK's Rob Kenyon finished with 15,696 votes.

By-Election Context

Voters in the Greater Manchester seat went to the polls on Thursday in a contest widely viewed as a major test for Britain's political parties. The by-election was triggered by the resignation of Labour MP Josh Simmons, who stepped aside to allow Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham to seek a return to Westminster. Burnham had previously been blocked by Labour from contesting the recent Gorton and Denton by-election, which was won by the Green Party.

Main Challenger

Burnham's primary opponent was Reform UK candidate Robert Kenyon, a plumber and Wigan councillor who faced questions over historic social media posts. A total of 14 candidates contested the seat.

Burnham's Political Background

Burnham previously served as MP for Leigh from 1997 to 2017 and held cabinet positions as Culture Secretary and briefly Health Secretary under Gordon Brown. He was elected Mayor of Greater Manchester in 2017, winning three terms.

Future Prospects

Before polls opened, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer indicated he would offer Burnham a "big" job in his government if he won. However, Burnham is widely expected to challenge Starmer for the Labour Party leadership and seek to replace him in Downing Street.

Other By-Elections

The Makerfield poll was one of three parliamentary by-elections held on Thursday. Voters in two Scottish constituencies also selected new MPs: Aberdeen South and the Arbroath and Broughty Ferry constituency. The contests were triggered by the election of SNP MPs Stephen Flynn and Stephen Gethins to Holyrood last month. The Conservatives won Aberdeen South, while the SNP held Arbroath and Broughty Ferry.
