The Spain-based financial institution stated that these closures form part of a comprehensive overhaul of its store network, directly linked to what it describes as a "continuing and sizeable shift" in customer behaviour. Santander reports that an overwhelming 96% of all transactions are now completed through digital channels, reflecting a rapid increase in the adoption of online and mobile banking services among its client base.

Second major closure announcement in under a year

This announcement comes less than twelve months after Santander's previous round of branch reductions. In March of last year, the business revealed plans to close 95 branches, a move that affected approximately 750 workers. The latest closures therefore represent a continuation of a strategic trend that has been reshaping the bank's physical presence across the United Kingdom.

Community bankers to replace traditional branches

In response to these changes, Santander has outlined its strategy for maintaining a local presence. The bank confirmed that closing branches will be replaced by "community bankers" who will operate from alternative locations. These include Sainsbury's Local stores and shared banking hubs, designed to provide continued face-to-face service in communities affected by the branch closures.

A Santander spokeswoman elaborated on the bank's approach, stating: "We are making changes to our branches to better support our customers in response to this digital shift. We remain committed to investing in our branch network, which includes full-service branches, counter-free branches, reduced-hour branches, Santander Locals, and our increasingly popular work cafes, alongside our digital banking services. Our goal is to support our customers however they choose to bank with us."
