Britons Sitting on £18 Billion in Unused Gift Cards, Warn Campaigners
£18bn in Unused Gift Cards Languishing in UK

British consumers are sitting on a potential fortune in forgotten plastic and digital vouchers, with an estimated £18 billion worth of gift cards remaining unused across the nation. This startling figure highlights a significant drain on personal finances and retail economies alike.

The Scale of Unspent Gift Card Wealth

According to the annual financial awareness campaign, National Use Your Gift Card Day, the average UK consumer currently holds approximately £190 in unused gift card value. The campaign itself takes place on 17 January, serving as a timely reminder for people to hunt down their dormant cards after the festive season. Tracy Tilson, founder of the initiative, emphasised the need for action in a recent statement.

"With the rush of the holidays behind us, January is the perfect time to reset, take inventory, and put your gift cards to use," Tilson said. She pointed out that these cards were intended for enjoyment and urged everyone to begin the new year "without leaving free money behind in a drawer, a wallet, or an inbox."

A Simple Plan to Reclaim Your Money

The campaign advocates a straightforward, three-step process for consumers to recover this latent value. First, conduct a thorough search of common hiding spots like handbags, drawers, and email inboxes. Next, devise a system to keep all located cards in one secure place to prevent future loss. Finally, and most importantly, redeem them.

"Use the gift card and enjoy something that starts your year on a happy – and financially smart – note," the campaign advises. "No matter how you spend it, redeeming a gift card honours the thoughtfulness of the giver and ensures you begin the new year without leaving money behind."

Turning Unwanted Cards into Charitable Donations

For those who find cards for retailers they do not frequent, simply discarding them is not the only option. The campaign highlights that consumers can donate the balance to a variety of nonprofit organisations, including well-known names like St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, as well as dedicated services such as GiftCards4Change and Donate Your Card.

The initiative also encourages retailers to play a proactive role. Businesses can spur gift card use by linking redemptions to charitable causes. Suggestions include partnering with charities connected to National Use Your Gift Card Day to accept unused cards, or matching the value of cards redeemed on the day with a donation.

"Often customers receive a gift card they may not need or want, so let’s make it easy for them to use it for good," the campaign noted. It proposes that businesses could create community events around the day, generating positive engagement with customers and local media.

The underlying message is clear: billions of pounds in potential spending power is currently lying dormant. A simple January audit of your home could unlock significant value, providing a personal financial boost or much-needed support for charitable causes.
