Arsenal sent a formidable warning to Manchester City in the Premier League title race with a commanding 3-0 victory over Fulham at the Emirates Stadium. Viktor Gyokeres scored twice and Bukayo Saka was also on target, extending the Gunners' lead at the top of the table to six points.
Gyokeres Shines Despite Havertz Injury
Kai Havertz's injury was expected to hinder Arsenal's title charge, but it has instead ignited Viktor Gyokeres, who appears determined to lead the Gunners to a historic double. After scoring a penalty in the midweek Champions League win over Atletico Madrid, Gyokeres netted twice and provided an assist in a ruthless display against Fulham.
Bukayo Saka, returning to the starting lineup, also looked sharp, scoring the second goal before being substituted at half-time. Arsenal's performance was both dominant and efficient, leaving no doubt about their title credentials.
Six-Point Lead Over Manchester City
With this victory, Arsenal now hold a six-point advantage over second-placed Manchester City, who face a tricky trip to Everton. While the title race is far from over, Arsenal's form suggests they will be difficult to catch. Mikel Arteta's side have won five of their last six league matches, scoring 14 goals in the process.
However, challenges remain. Atletico Madrid visit the Emirates on Tuesday for the second leg of their Champions League semi-final, and Diego Simeone's side are known for their defensive resilience and tactical nous. Arsenal will need to replicate this performance to secure a place in the final.
Lewis-Skelly Impresses in Midfield
Myles Lewis-Skelly made his first senior start in midfield and delivered a man-of-the-match display, raising questions about whether he has been underused this season. His energy and composure were key to Arsenal's dominance, as he helped control the midfield battle against Fulham.
Eberechi Eze also caused problems for the Fulham defence, drifting into pockets of space and creating opportunities. The hosts took the lead in the ninth minute when Saka turned Raul Jimenez inside out before squaring for Gyokeres to tap home his 20th goal of the season.
Dominant First Half
Fulham had not conceded a goal inside the opening 15 minutes of any Premier League match this season, but Arsenal breached that record twice. Riccardo Calafiori had a goal ruled out for offside after a VAR check, but Arsenal continued to press. Gyokeres turned provider for Saka, who drilled a low shot into the bottom corner to make it 2-0.
Gyokeres then scored his second just before half-time, rising high to meet Leandro Trossard's cross and looping a header over Bernd Leno. The Swedish striker had a chance to complete his hat-trick after the break, but Leno denied him with a fine save.
Perfect Preparation for Atletico
Arsenal could not find a fourth goal, despite Calafiori hitting the crossbar with a header. Gyokeres and Declan Rice were substituted after an hour to keep them fresh for Tuesday's Champions League clash. The victory was the perfect preparation for what promises to be a challenging encounter against Atletico Madrid.
Arsenal's goal difference also received a boost, which could prove crucial in a tight title race. With the Premier League and Champions League still within reach, Mikel Arteta's side are firing on all cylinders.
