Raiders Select Fernando Mendoza with No. 1 Pick in NFL Draft
Raiders Pick Mendoza First Overall in NFL Draft

The Las Vegas Raiders have pinned their hopes on Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza, selecting him with the first overall pick in Thursday night's NFL draft. The franchise, which has not won a playoff game since its 2002 Super Bowl appearance despite three Lombardi Trophies, is counting on Mendoza to lead a turnaround.

Development Plan

The Raiders have clarified they will not rush Mendoza's development. They signed veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins, who is expected to start the season. This top selection places considerable pressure on both Mendoza and the organization to validate the choice, especially as he was not widely considered a top prospect a year ago, despite the pick being telegraphed for months.

Mendoza's Rise

Mendoza stunningly led Indiana University to its first national championship. He did not attend the draft in Pittsburgh, opting to watch with family and friends in Miami. His journey has been one of overcoming odds, from being a capable starter at Cal to a one-year wonder at Indiana, raising questions about whether his success was due to a quarterback-friendly system or coach Curt Cignetti unlocking his potential.

The Raiders' last No. 1 overall pick, JaMarcus Russell from LSU in 2007, is remembered as one of the biggest busts in NFL draft history, lasting just three seasons with a 7-18 record. Whether Mendoza will follow a similar path or succeed remains to be seen.

New Hope

The Raiders have something new — hope. Klint Kubiak is the fifth full-time head coach since the club moved to Las Vegas in 2020, and the quarterback position has seen a similar revolving door. However, the roster is being built up to give the quarterback a fair chance to succeed.

Second-year general manager John Spytek used the team's salary-cap space to commit nearly $300 million to eight players, including three-time Pro Bowl center Tyler Linderbaum and wide receiver Jalen Nailor. The Raiders also bring back tight end Brock Bowers, running back Ashton Jeanty, and left tackle Kolton Miller to support Cousins and Mendoza.

But Mendoza must do his part. The Raiders entered the opening night of the draft on the clock. Now it is the quarterback who quickly faces a ticking clock.
