Ilia Topuria's pre-fight strategy of hosting a celebratory dinner just one day before his clash with Justin Gaethje could potentially backfire, as the lightweight champion prepares to defend his title for the first time. The Georgian-Spanish fighter will make his highly anticipated return to the cage next month against the interim lightweight champion, headlining the historic White House card on June 14. This marks nearly a year since 'El Matador's' last appearance.
Topuria's Path to the Title
Topuria, 29, vacated the featherweight strap after one successful title defence to move up to lightweight. He immediately earned a shot at the gold and knocked out Charles Oliveira in the first round at UFC 317. However, the reigning king was forced to take time away due to personal reasons, leading the UFC to create an interim title bout earlier this year between Gaethje and Liverpool's Paddy Pimblett.
Gaethje earned his third crack at the undisputed prize after a thrilling back-and-forth victory over Pimblett. Despite his impressive resume, Gaethje faces a tough challenge in Topuria, who has racked up notable wins recently.
Confidence and Celebrations
Topuria is known for his bold predictions and pre-fight confidence, often adding wins to his social media bios before fights. In a recent interview with ESPN, he revealed plans for a massive celebration on the White House grounds the night before the fight. "We are going to celebrate before the fight," he said. "Actually, we have everything organised. My team is already taking care of that."
This is not the first time Topuria has hosted such festivities before a fight. Prior to his knockout win over Oliveira, he held a similar but smaller celebration. Despite the risky timing, Topuria remains confident in his ability to deliver another dominant performance.
Dismissing Gaethje's Threat
Topuria expressed confusion over the lack of belief in Gaethje as an opponent. "Honestly, what I thought [when Gaethje earned the title shot] is, 'What a gift,'" he explained. "But at the same time, I didn't know what kind of expectations the fans would have when the UFC announced I'm fighting Justin Gaethje. The conversation is not even about who is going to win, because everyone is like, 'Ilia is going to win.' They're all talking about how am I going to knock him out and 'Will Justin last one round?' This is the conversation."
As the fight approaches, all eyes will be on whether Topuria's pre-fight feast proves to be a masterstroke or a costly misstep.
