EDF Revives Sunday Saver Scheme with Free Electricity Incentives
In a bid to help households manage soaring energy costs, major supplier EDF has announced the return of its popular Sunday Saver challenge for February. The initiative rewards customers with free electricity on Sundays if they successfully shift their consumption away from weekday peak hours.
How the Sunday Saver Challenge Works
The scheme requires participants to reduce their electricity usage during designated peak periods each week, specifically between 4pm and 7pm on weekdays. By doing so, customers can earn between four and sixteen hours of free electricity the following Sunday.
EDF has scheduled four Sunday Saver challenges throughout February and early March:
- February 15
- February 22
- March 1
- March 8
Customers with smart meters must register by Sunday, February 1 to participate in the programme. The energy giant reports that more than 260,000 households have already benefited from this scheme, accumulating over 17 million free hours of electricity worth approximately £5.2 million in bill credits.
Customer Success Stories and Practical Benefits
Natasha Shields from Barnsley, South Yorkshire, exemplifies how families can maximise the scheme's benefits. Having earned more than 680 free hours since joining the programme, she explains their household strategy: "We switch off everything we can between 4–7pm, leaving cooking and showers until after this time. During those hours, we use a battery-powered light and play board games together, which has brought us closer as a family."
Ms Shields continues: "We use the free electricity we've earned for cleaning, meal prep and laundry on Sunday, which is helpful. The Sunday Saver challenge is brilliant - and has helped us with the cost of living which is getting more expensive by the day."
During the recent Christmas period, EDF distributed over 910,536 free hours of electricity to more than 100,000 customers, with many receiving eight hours of complimentary power.
Strategic Benefits for Grid Management and Sustainability
Jon Perks, Sales & Marketing Director at EDF, emphasises the dual benefits of the programme: "With winter bills at their highest, Sunday Saver continues to give customers a simple, practical way to cut costs when they need it most. Households can track their usage through our Energy Hub, and spot opportunities to save electricity across their home, reducing their carbon footprint at the same time."
He adds: "It's a straightforward way to ease pressure on bills while supporting a more sustainable electricity grid."
Participants can monitor their Sunday Saver progress through the Energy Hub accessible via MyAccount, which provides personalised insights into household energy consumption patterns.
Complementary EV Tariff Incentives
This announcement follows EDF's recent promotion offering £50 credit to both new and existing customers who sign up for any of its electric vehicle tariffs within the next month. The complete range of EV options includes:
- GoElectric
- Pod Point EV Exclusive
- Evolve
- Pod Point Plug & Power
All these tariffs feature five hours of reduced-rate electricity nightly between midnight and 5am, applicable to both home and vehicle charging needs.
As energy bills remain significantly higher than historical averages, initiatives like Sunday Saver provide tangible relief for consumers while encouraging more efficient energy usage patterns across the national grid.
