Emergency callouts for household issues such as blocked drains, toilet malfunctions, and leaking pipes are set to spike significantly on Easter Monday, according to a detailed analysis by specialist provider HomeServe. The data indicates that the bank holiday weekend, with households bustling with extra activity and cooking, often brings home emergencies to a critical point.
Easter Monday Emerges as Peak Day for Callouts
HomeServe's examination of data spanning from 2023 to 2025 shows that Easter Monday consistently ranks as the busiest day during the Easter bank holiday period. Specifically, Easter Monday accounts for nearly a third (31%) of all emergency callouts over the weekend. In comparison, Good Friday sees 26% of callouts, Saturday 25%, and Easter Sunday 18%.
Why Homes Face Increased Strain Over Easter
Chris Houghton, a home expert at HomeServe, explained the underlying reasons for this surge. "Easter weekend is one of those times when homes are working harder than usual, from extra cooking to more people using bathrooms and appliances," he said. "Often, small issues like slow drains or minor leaks go unnoticed or are put off until after the weekend. By the time Monday comes around, those problems have built up and require urgent attention."
Signs of impending emergencies can include slow-draining sinks, gurgling noises, or unpleasant odours, which HomeServe highlights as early warnings of blockages or faults.
Expert Tips to Prevent Holiday Emergencies
To help households avoid a bank holiday ending in an emergency callout, Mr Houghton offers several practical suggestions:
- Avoid tipping fat down the drain: Easter roasts and increased cooking can exert pressure on pipes, leading to blockages. Dispose of fats properly to prevent issues.
- Monitor early warning signs: Keep an eye out for slow-draining sinks, gurgling noises, or bad smells, as these can indicate a blockage forming. Addressing minor problems early can avert larger emergencies later.
- Do not ignore dripping taps or small leaks: A minor leak might seem insignificant, but over a busy weekend, it can escalate quickly. Early repair or containment can prevent more serious damage.
- Know how to shut off your water: In the event of a pipe leak or burst, being able to quickly locate and turn off a stopcock can limit damage and provide time until professional help arrives.
By following these guidelines, homeowners can reduce the risk of disruptions and ensure a smoother Easter holiday without the stress of unexpected home emergencies.
