Summer Kitchen Refresh: Expert Tips for a Seasonal Makeover
The kitchen, often described as the hardest working room in the house, deserves a sprightly update as summer approaches. With longer, warmer days inviting indoor-outdoor living and al fresco socials, a quick refresh can breathe new life into this central space. Sam Wylie-Harris highlights that sunshine and blue skies often inspire a simple spruce-up, making it the perfect time for a kitchen makeover.
Embrace Greenery and Fresh Herbs
Looeeze Grossman, founder of The Used Kitchen Company with over two decades of experience, emphasises that now is an ideal moment to introduce more greenery. "Vases of freshly cut flowers instantly brighten the space and make it feel more welcoming," she says. Choosing blooms similar to those flowering outside creates a lovely connection between your kitchen and garden.
For herbs, Grossman notes you have plenty of options. "If you have a garden, summer is the ideal time to grow them outside – they thrive in the warmth, and you’ll have a far greater yield." For those short on outdoor space, a dedicated herb planter inside the kitchen serves as a stylish and practical alternative. Having fresh herbs to hand, like mint for Pimm's or basil for salads, makes a real difference when cooking and entertaining.
Declutter for a Lighter Feel
A seasonal sort-out can make a surprising difference, according to Grossman. Pack away winter staples such as slow cookers and heavy casseroles to free up cupboard space for items you'll actually use. She suggests focusing on salad bowls, serving platters, outdoor crockery, and barbecue kits. If you have a pantry, the upper shelves are perfect for storing bulky items not needed until autumn.
"A well-organised summer kitchen is simply one where everything you need is easy to grab, and nothing is getting in the way," Grossman explains. This small change can make the kitchen feel lighter and more functional almost immediately.
Incorporate Seasonal Fruit and Scents
Summer fruit brings bright colours and citrus scents. Grossman recommends filling fruit bowls with lemons, limes, oranges, and mangoes. "No one ever wants to be without a slice of lemon or lime when making summer drinks, so having them ready to go will keep your drinks prepped and your kitchen smelling wonderful," she says. Additionally, keeping ice cube trays filled is a simple yet crucial tip to avoid irritation during gatherings.
Switching out cosy winter scents like cinnamon and nutmeg for citrus or garden fragrances can transform the mood. Grossman advises exploring reed diffusers, room sprays, and scented candles. "It’s worth taking your time to find a scent you genuinely love, rather than just grabbing something off the shelf," she adds. Vanilla, for instance, feels warm in winter but evokes ice cream and sun lotion in summer.
Update Accessories and Soft Furnishings
Changing tea towels and oven gloves is one of the cheapest and most effective ways to brighten a kitchen, Grossman notes. For light or neutral kitchens, citrus yellows, greens, and oranges work brilliantly, while softer pastels like sage green or cornflower blue suit warmer-toned spaces. Matching small accessories can help bring everything together, but don't be afraid to mix and match colours.
Cushions and seat pads offer another inexpensive refresh. "Having different cushion covers for the different seasons can be an inexpensive way to give your kitchen a quick refresh," Grossman says. Keeping the same cushion pad inside allows for easy switching to summery covers, adding colour and interest, especially on banquette or bench seating.
At the end of the day, Grossman concludes that none of these changes needs to cost much or take long. Together, they add up to a kitchen that feels fresh, functional, and genuinely ready for summer entertaining.
