A popular British food content creator has put the nation's supermarket Cheddar cheeses to the ultimate test, sampling 30 varieties to crown a winner and delivering a scathing zero-out-of-ten verdict on one plant-based option she described as tasting like "sweet plasticine".
The Great British Cheddar Taste Test
Becca Stock, from Gloucester, who shares her culinary reviews with over 567,000 followers on TikTok under the username beccaeatseverything, undertook the mammoth tasting. Her goal was straightforward: to determine which of the UK's leading grocery chains sells the best Cheddar. She purchased and sampled cheeses from major retailers including Tesco, Sainsbury's, Marks and Spencer, Iceland, Aldi, Asda, and Lidl.
In a video posted on 17th January 2026, Becca kicked off her cheesy challenge by stating, "I want to find out who makes the best Cheddar cheese, so I've bought 30 different types from every supermarket. Let's rate them from worst to best." She later clarified that each cheese was judged on its own merits, not directly against the others.
From 'Vile' Plasticine to Cheese Heaven
The dubious honour of last place went to Violife Supreme Cheddarton, a vegan cheese alternative. Becca's reaction was immediate and visceral. Upon tasting it, her face contorted as she exclaimed, "Urgh, vile. It tastes like sweet plasticine. Zero out of 10."
However, the rankings quickly improved. In fifth place was Aldi's Spicy Cheddar with Chilli, which earned a glowing 9.5/10. Becca praised its intense, building heat and creamy texture.
Aldi's Specially Selected Extra Mature Cheddar secured fourth position with a perfect 10/10 score, described as "amazing" for lovers of a strong mature cheese.
The bronze medal went to Lidl's Deluxe Somerset Crunchy Extra Mature Cheddar, another perfect scorer that sent Becca to "cheese heaven" with its punchy, creamy, and crumbly profile.
The Top Two Contenders
Finishing in a very close second place was Ivy's Reserve Vintage Somerset Cheddar. This cheese, available in multiple supermarkets and marketed as the world's first carbon-neutral Cheddar, also received a 10/10. Becca noted its sweet, nutty, almost caramelised flavour and perfect texture, suggesting it would elevate a simple cheese on toast.
But the ultimate champion was a flavoured offering from a high-street favourite. Marks and Spencer's Barber's Farmhouse Truffle Cheddar claimed the top spot. Becca declared it the best truffle cheese she'd ever tasted, awarding it a 10/10 for its immediate, powerful truffle flavour complemented by sweetness, smokiness, and nuttiness.
The experiment proved that while the humble Cheddar is a British staple, the quality and flavour experience vary dramatically from the sublime to, in one case, the synthetic-tasting. For cheese lovers, the hunt for the perfect block just got a whole lot easier.
