A resourceful father from Lancashire has revealed a clever supermarket strategy that saved him more than £60 on his grocery shop, and the trick is now being adopted by savvy shoppers across the country.
The 'Magic Trick' with the Self-Scanner
Elliot Jeory, a 39-year-old dad-of-two from Preston, is no stranger to hunting for a bargain. He recently shared a video that has amassed over 297,900 views, demonstrating what he calls a "magic trick" at his local Sainsbury's. While doing a kitchen restock, Elliot spotted Aero mint chocolate bars advertised at a reduced price of £2.50, down from £5. However, when he scanned the item using the store's self-scanner, the true price was revealed to be just 50p per bar.
He went on to purchase 12 bars, which would have cost £30 at the shelf price, for only £6. Elliot then found KitKat bundles marked at £2.20. Scanning them showed a price of just 22p each, allowing him to buy 20 for £4.40 instead of £44. In total, these two chocolate discoveries saved him a whopping £63.60. "The funny thing is I don’t even eat chocolate," Elliot admitted. "I’ll be giving most of this away, but it is worth it."
Shoppers Rush to Replicate the Savings
The viral clip, shared with What's The Jam, sparked a wave of excitement and imitation. Other customers quickly headed to their local Sainsbury's to try the hack for themselves, reporting similar successes. One viewer, Sylwia, commented: "I got 24 salted caramel profiteroles this morning for 2p!" Another shopper triumphantly wrote that they had secured orchids for 1p that were originally priced at £20.
Reactions on social media ranged from shock to humour. Giorgia exclaimed: "Wait. Sainsbury’s doing secret sales. Holy s*** that’s makes a change!" while Richard joked: "Does that scanner work on council tax?" Dom saw the long-term benefit, noting: "That's next year xmas sorted."
More Penny Deals Revealed in Follow-Up
Elliot didn't stop there. In a subsequent TikTok video that gained 61,400 views, he highlighted even more drastic price drops found using the scanner. He claims shoppers can find items like camembert, Baileys pouring cream, and fig brandy cream for as little as 1p. Other bargains included custard creams for 7p, sweet mix for 12p, chocolate oranges for 15p, and gluten-free chocolate baubles for 49p.
Elliot explained the phenomenon, stating: "Most of them have not updated the prices yet. You can re-gift these for Easter. Head down to your local Sainsbury’s, use a scanner and then scan the item because a lot of them have not been updated. The prices are updating on a daily basis while stocks last." The advice is clear: for those seeking unexpected discounts, the self-scanner is an essential tool, potentially revealing unadvertised reductions that aren't reflected on the shelf labels.
