Eddie Bauer Bankruptcy: Gift Cards Expire Soon

Eddie Bauer Enters Bankruptcy, Customers Face Gift Card Deadline

Major outdoor clothing retailer Eddie Bauer has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, leaving customers with just under a month to redeem gift cards and loyalty programme points before they expire. According to court filings, all rewards and gift cards accumulated through the brand's Adventure Points scheme will become invalid after March 12, 2026.

Immediate Action Required for Shoppers

Eddie Bauer shoppers must act quickly to avoid losing their money, as the bankruptcy announcement gives them less than four weeks to use their stored value. The retailer, operated by Catalyst Brands, is attempting to sell the business while closing down its physical stores across the United States and Canada. Approximately 180 locations are affected, with 24 outlets situated in Canada alone.

All purchases made during the closure period are final, with no returns permitted on goods bought at these stores. The company employed roughly 379 staff in Canada when it sought bankruptcy protection, highlighting the significant impact on employment.

Bankruptcy Proceedings and Store Closures

Catalyst Brands is pursuing a restructuring plan to optimise value for stakeholders and ensure profitability. Chief Executive Rosen acknowledged the difficulty of the decision, stating to the Associated Press that this move is necessary to maintain strong liquidity and cash flow. Should a buyer not be secured, the company will commence an orderly wind-down of store operations.

The brand is set to close all its physical shops in Massachusetts and throughout the country as the Chapter 11 bankruptcy process advances. However, the filing does not impact Eddie Bauer's online retail and wholesale arms, which are operated by a separate entity known as Outdoor 5. This entity has not sought creditor protection.

Limited Geographic Impact

Similarly unaffected are Eddie Bauer's outlets beyond Canada and the US, as those locations are managed by other licensees who are not part of the bankruptcy proceedings. This means customers in other regions can continue to use their gift cards and points as usual, provided they shop at licensed stores or online through the unaffected channels.

The situation underscores the precarious nature of retail in the current economic climate, with consumers advised to monitor such developments closely to protect their investments in gift cards and loyalty programmes.
