Ingka Group, the owner of the majority of IKEA stores globally, has unveiled a significant retail partnership that will see sports retailer Decathlon open a new store within the IKEA location in Croydon, United Kingdom, this spring. This move represents a pioneering trial by IKEA to integrate third-party businesses into its iconic blue-box stores, with the aim of attracting more shoppers and generating additional revenue from existing retail space.

A Standalone Store Within IKEA

The Decathlon outlet will operate as a standalone unit, featuring its own dedicated customer entrance. It will occupy an area of 1,188 square metres inside the expansive 25,000 square metre IKEA Croydon store. This initiative marks the first instance where a major international brand has been incorporated into an IKEA blue-box store, building upon smaller-scale trials conducted previously.

Previous Trials and Broader Strategy

IKEA has previously experimented with similar integrations, such as hosting Nordic electronics retailer Kjell & Company in its stores in Sweden.
