IKEA Unveils Plans for 10 New US Store Openings in 2026

Swedish home furnishings giant IKEA has announced a major expansion into the United States, with plans to open 10 new stores in 2026. This move follows a successful year in 2025, during which the company opened 14 locations across the country. The new stores will enhance IKEA's global presence, which currently includes 504 stores worldwide, with 77 situated in North America.

New Store Locations and Strategic Closures

The 10 new IKEA stores will be strategically located in key urban and suburban areas. The confirmed cities include Chicago, Illinois; Culver City, California; Dallas, Texas (with two separate locations); Fort Collins, Colorado; Houston, Texas; Huntsville, Alabama; Phoenix, Arizona; Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Washington, D.C. Concurrently, IKEA will close its Memphis store in May 2026, as part of a broader restructuring effort to optimize its retail footprint.

Originally, IKEA had planned to open only six new stores in 2026, but due to the robust performance and positive market reception in 2025, the company decided to increase this number to 10. Rob Olson, Interim CEO of IKEA U.S., emphasized this strategic shift in a recent statement, highlighting the company's commitment to growth and innovation.

Building on Momentum and Enhancing Accessibility

In his statement, Olson outlined IKEA's vision for the future, stating, "Looking ahead to FY26, we will build on this momentum, focusing on continued investment in the U.S. to make IKEA more affordable, accessible and sustainable." This expansion aims to bring IKEA's signature products, such as the Storklinta, Kallax, and Strandfloka lines, to a wider American audience, making home furnishings more attainable for consumers across diverse regions.

Currently, IKEA operates 54 stores in the United States, with a significant concentration in California (9 stores), Texas (7 stores), and Florida (5 stores). With the new openings, California and Texas will each boast 10 IKEA locations, reinforcing the company's stronghold in these populous states. This distribution underscores IKEA's strategy to target high-demand markets while exploring growth opportunities in emerging areas like Alabama and Oklahoma.

IKEA's Unique Retail Model and Industry Recognition

IKEA is renowned for its distinctive warehouse-style stores, which offer a vast array of products ranging from furniture and home decor to Swedish delicacies like meatballs and cinnamon rolls. Founded in Sweden in the 1950s, IKEA expanded internationally in the 1960s before opening its first U.S. store in Pennsylvania in 1985. Beyond its large retail outlets, the company also operates boutique-style Plan and Order stores, where customers can receive personalized design assistance or use self-service stations to plan and order items for specific rooms like kitchens or bedrooms.

The retailer's innovative approach has not gone unnoticed. In 2025, IKEA ranked first in the American Innovation Index, a prestigious measure that evaluates companies based on customer-focused creativity, innovation, value provision, and positive societal and environmental impact. This accolade placed IKEA ahead of industry giants like Apple, John Deere, Amazon, and Microsoft, highlighting its leadership in the retail sector.

Impact on the US Retail Landscape

According to recent data from the National Retail Federation, IKEA stands out as the only primarily brick-and-mortar home-furnishings company among the top 50 retailers in the U.S. This expansion is poised to strengthen its market position, offering consumers more accessible options for affordable and sustainable home solutions. The new stores are expected to generate employment opportunities and stimulate local economies in the host cities, further cementing IKEA's role as a key player in the American retail industry.

As IKEA prepares for this significant growth phase, the company remains focused on its core values of affordability, accessibility, and sustainability. With these 10 new stores set to open in 2026, more Americans will have the chance to experience the unique IKEA shopping experience, blending practicality with Scandinavian design aesthetics.
