Levi's UK Sales Surge as Celebrities Fuel Denim Revival
Levi's has experienced significant sales growth in the UK, with the country emerging as one of its fastest-growing markets last year. This resurgence is largely attributed to high-profile celebrities such as Noel Gallagher and Harry Styles, who have been spotted wearing the brand's denim, alongside other trendsetters like Grime Gran. The revival of 1990s fashion trends has particularly boosted sales of classic Levi's 501 jeans, while new styles like baggy and cinch jeans have also gained popularity.
Denim's Post-Pandemic Comeback
During the Covid-19 pandemic, denim sales declined as consumers shifted towards more comfortable, slouchy attire for home lounging. Additionally, global high street closures impacted sales, as many shoppers prefer to try on jeans in-store for a proper fit. However, recent data indicates a strong recovery, with jeans sales now rising at approximately 1.5% annually, outpacing the broader fashion market.
Louise Déglise-Favre, lead apparel analyst at GlobalData, noted that denim is currently "having a bit of a moment", driven by a consumer shift towards value for money. This trend emphasizes getting one's money's worth rather than simply seeking low prices, benefiting trusted brands like Levi's known for quality and durability.
Brand Rejuvenation and Market Dynamics
Levi's has strategically rejuvenated its image through subtle celebrity partnerships that appeal to younger shoppers, making the brand "slowly become cool again", according to Déglise-Favre. The brand's strong resale value on platforms such as Vinted has further enhanced its appeal, especially as competition from fast-fashion retailers like Topshop has diminished.
Susie Draffan, senior denim strategist at WGSN, highlighted that denim brands are expanding their product ranges to include jackets, shirts, and skirts, alongside diverse jean silhouettes from wide-leg to boot-cut styles. She explained that nostalgia for the 1990s and 2000s, largely fueled by Generation Z, has revitalized trends like double denim and complete denim outfits, making denim a versatile staple in everyday wardrobes.
Sales Channels and Collaborations
Sales growth for Levi's in the UK has been driven by robust online sales, wholesale accounts, and over 70 company-owned stores. The brand's London-based Levi's Haus of Strauss, a showroom targeting VIPs and tastemakers, has facilitated new collaborations with figures like Harry Styles and brands such as Sacai, Barbour, and Jordan Stephens of Rizzle Kicks.
These local efforts complement global endorsements, including Beyoncé's promotion of double denim in her 2024 album Cowboy Carter and Timothée Chalamet wearing vintage-style Levi's in the 2025 Dylan biopic Complete Unknown. Lucia Marcuzzo, managing director of Levi's European operations, emphasized the brand's focus on reinventing icons like the 501 while maintaining classic fits, stating it's about "understanding what the customer wants and reinventing and reimagining yourself".
