Poundland to Close Over 100 UK Stores by Early 2025 in Major Restructuring
Poundland announces new wave of winter store closures

Discount chain Poundland has confirmed a fresh round of shop closures set for this winter, as its extensive restructuring programme continues to reshape the retailer's UK footprint.

Winter Wave of Closures Announced

On Friday 5th December 2025, the value retailer announced that a further 14 stores will shut their doors by early February. This comes on top of 19 other locations already slated for closure in the coming months. The company stated that all these shops have now launched clearance events, with discounts of up to 40% off across a wide range of stock including homeware, groceries, clothing, and beauty products.

Over 100 Stores to Disappear from High Streets

This latest announcement is part of a sweeping restructuring plan that began earlier this year. By the time the process concludes early next year, Poundland will have closed more than 100 shops across the United Kingdom. The breakdown of closures is significant:

  • 57 stores had already been shut by the end of September 2025, targeted for being the chain's least profitable outlets.
  • Another 40 locations were previously announced for closure, primarily where landlords chose not to renew leases.
  • The newly announced 14 closures, plus the remaining 19, will complete the programme.

Once finished, the UK estate is expected to shrink from approximately 800 shops at the start of the restructuring to a leaner portfolio of between 650 and 700 stores.

"Saying Goodbye with Amazing Value"

Darren MacDonald, Poundland's UK country manager, addressed the impact on local communities. "We know how disappointing it is when we leave a store," he said. "But before we close our doors for a final time, we're determined to say goodbye by offering even more amazing value to customers."

He emphasised that the special reductions are a way to leave locations with pride, and encouraged shoppers to visit one of the hundreds of Poundland stores that will continue to operate nationwide.

The ongoing transformation of Poundland marks a significant moment for the UK's value retail sector, as it adapts to changing high street dynamics and consumer habits in the post-pandemic era.
