Pret A Manger to Open First UK Drive-Thru This Spring

In a significant move for the UK's coffee market, Pret A Manger is preparing to launch its first-ever drive-thru location in the United Kingdom this May. The new site will be situated at Oakwood Gate services in Birchwood, on the outskirts of Warrington, Cheshire, marking a strategic expansion beyond the brand's traditional high street presence.

Ambitious Expansion Plans Revealed

This initial drive-thru is likely just the beginning of a much broader rollout. According to reports from The Sun, Pret A Manger's CEO, Pano Christou, has outlined ambitious plans to open between 300 and 400 new travel locations across the UK. Some of these new sites are expected to include drive-thrus, as the chain seeks to capitalise on the growing demand for convenient, on-the-go dining options.

Christou previously told The Times that the company is actively exploring drive-thru opportunities, emphasising that Pret's offer of fresh products sets it apart from competitors. "We are exploring it because we think our offer is so different to everyone else," he stated, highlighting the brand's commitment to quality and freshness.

Collaboration with Motor Fuel Group

The new drive-thru venture is being launched in collaboration with the Motor Fuel Group, a major petrol station operator. This partnership aims to leverage high-traffic locations to reach a wider audience of motorists and travellers. Advertisements and flyers have already been spotted at the former Starbucks cafe at Oakwood Gate services, signalling the imminent opening.

Pret A Manger currently operates approximately 500 shops in the UK, with around 250 of those located in London. Globally, the chain has about 700 outlets across 21 markets. In the UK alone, Pret employs roughly 6,100 team members, baristas, and shop managers, contributing significantly to the local economy.

Broader Strategic Initiatives

This drive-thru expansion is part of a larger strategy to adapt the brand to evolving consumer lifestyles. Last year, Pret introduced a new shop format in Broughty Ferry and Maidenhead, featuring more spacious, family-friendly environments with made-to-order food and drink services. These locations are designed for longer, leisurely visits, catering to customers who are less rushed.

Clare Clough, Pret's Managing Director for UK & Europe, explained the rationale behind these changes: "Throughout the past five years, we've made it a priority to bring Pret to more people, whether you're a City worker commuting to the office, a parent juggling work and family life, or someone catching up with friends." She added that the brand is now focusing on becoming a destination for those seeking a comfortable space to enjoy quality food and spend time with loved ones.

Commitment to Sustainability and Community

In line with its corporate values, Pret A Manger continues to work with The Pret Foundation to donate surplus food at the end of each day to local charities. This initiative underscores the company's dedication to reducing waste and supporting communities, even as it expands its physical footprint.

The launch of the UK's first Pret A Manger drive-thru represents a pivotal moment for the chain, blending convenience with its signature fresh offerings. As the brand explores new formats and locations, it aims to meet the diverse needs of modern consumers while maintaining its commitment to quality and social responsibility.
