UK holidaymakers looking for a festive escape without breaking the bank should set their sights east this year, according to new research. A study has identified the Baltic capitals as offering the best value for a classic Christmas market experience.
Baltic Capitals Offer Unbeatable Value
The comprehensive analysis from Post Office Travel Money has revealed that Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, is the cheapest destination for a two-night trip for two. It was closely followed by Riga in Latvia, which secured the second spot in the value rankings. The research took into account essential costs such as return flights, bed and breakfast accommodation, and meals and refreshments at the markets themselves.
Price Drops Defy Sterling's Weakness
In a surprising turn for British travellers, the study found that prices have actually decreased in around half of the surveyed European destinations. This is despite a recent fall in the value of sterling against many European currencies. This trend is perfectly illustrated by Berlin, which saw a significant improvement in its value proposition. The German capital rose to eighth place in the rankings, thanks to a substantial 22 per cent drop in combined flight and accommodation costs.
Choose Wisely to Save Money
The research underscores the importance of careful destination selection for cost-conscious travellers. While the Baltic states currently offer the best deals, other traditional favourites can be considerably more expensive. The study pinpointed Copenhagen, Denmark, as the most expensive destination surveyed for a Christmas market break. The key takeaway for UK holidaymakers is that with strategic planning and by choosing emerging destinations, an enchanting festive getaway can still be an affordable reality.
