Peak District's Dragon's Back Walk Named One of UK's Most Beautiful Hikes
Dragon's Back Walk Named UK's Most Beautiful Hike

A Peak District walk with gorgeous countryside views has been named one of the 'most beautiful' hiking routes in the UK, and it is just an hour away from several major cities. Known as The Dragon's Back Walk, this hiking ridge trail is located in Staffordshire, starting in the charming hamlet of Hollinsclough. The trail takes its name from two hills – Chrome Hill and Parkhouse Hill – which resemble slumbering dragons.

A Breathtaking Escape

With the weather improving across the country, now is the ideal moment to head outdoors and immerse yourself in nature. Walking and hiking offer tremendous benefits for both physical and mental health. Not only do you reap the rewards of exercise, but the fresh air and tranquil surroundings can significantly reduce stress and anxiety. If you are seeking an escape this weekend, this 'breathtaking' walk might be exactly what you need. It is around an hour's drive from Derby, Sheffield, and Manchester, and features spectacular countryside vistas. Those who have tackled the trail describe it as 'one of the most beautiful hikes in the UK'.

Challenging Yet Rewarding Terrain

While the route is relatively short at just under 4 miles, it is far from easy and may not suit beginners. Certain sections feature uneven rocks alongside steep climbs and descents. The Let's Go Peak District website characterises the terrain as 'very challenging in places'. However, the panoramic views from atop both hills make it thoroughly worthwhile. A travel and hiking enthusiast named Alice shared the route on her TikTok account, revealing the walk took her approximately three and a half hours to complete. Complimentary parking is available in the neighbouring village, and numerous benches are dotted along the way for picnics or rest stops.

Alice wrote in her caption: 'This might just be one of the most beautiful hikes in the UK! There are two rocky hills that literally look like sleeping dragons (hence the nickname Dragon's Back), surrounded by gorgeous countryside. The hike is pretty steep in places, and you will have to scramble over rocks, too. You can hike it in either direction, and the hike took us around 3.5 hours. There is free parking nearby in the village and several benches nearby, perfect for a picnic! Plus, the scenery is so gorgeous, especially if you visit on a sunny day!'

Route Details

The complete walking route can be found on the Let's Go Peak District website, which describes the trek as 'wonderful'. They write: 'This wonderful walk starts and ends in the pretty little hamlet of Hollinsclough. To begin, it takes you along field paths and country lanes with magnificent views over the wild Staffordshire hills, dotted with farms and criss-crossed with stone walls. The route then brings you along the crest of one half of the famous Dragon's Back, over the top of Chrome Hill (425m) with panoramic views over the wide valley, including a spectacular view of Parkhouse Hill ahead. You then descend on field paths and follow country lanes to return to Hollinsclough.'

Those commenting on Alice's video were equally full of admiration for the walk, with seasoned hikers describing the scenery as 'spectacular' and those yet to attempt the route eager to add it to their list. One commenter enthused: 'Did this 4 or 5 weeks ago with my Akita and absolutely loved it. Beautiful day as well, views were stupidly spectacular.' Another offered a characteristically British perspective on the weather, noting: 'Without all the rain, we would not have these views!'
