A stunning hidden beach, just a 90-minute flight from the United Kingdom, has been recognised as one of the most beautiful coastal spots in the world. Keem Beach, located on Achill Island in County Mayo, Ireland, secured the 11th position in a new ranking of Europe’s top beaches by The World’s 50 Best Beaches.
Tropical Vibes in the Irish Countryside
The beach is celebrated for its “raw natural beauty” and “surprisingly blue waters” that evoke tropical destinations. Its horseshoe-shaped bay is protected by towering cliffs and picturesque hills, creating calm waters ideal for summer swimming. The soft, near-white sands are complemented by a stream flowing from the surrounding green cliffs into the clear sea.
Scenic Drive and Nearby Attractions
Although remote, the drive to Keem Beach offers breathtaking coastal views along winding country roads. Achill Island, Ireland’s largest island, is connected to the mainland by a bridge. Nearby, visitors can explore the Croaghaun cliffs, some of the highest sea cliffs in Europe, reaching 687 metres. These cliffs provide opportunities for hiking and spotting bottlenose dolphins and basking sharks in the Atlantic waters below.
Another notable attraction is the Deserted Village at Slievemore, a collection of around 100 stone cottage ruins stretching for a mile. Evidence suggests settlement here dates back 5,000 years, but famine and tragedy left the village abandoned and silent.
Film Location and Accessibility
Keem Beach and other Achill Island locations featured in the 2022 film The Banshees of Inisherin, starring Barry Keoghan and Colin Farrell. Filmmakers used Lough Acorrymore, a serene lake surrounded by glacial cliffs, among other sites.
The beach is a two-hour drive from Ireland West Airport Knock, which offers flights from the UK via Aer Lingus and Ryanair. Flights from London take just 90 minutes, with Ryanair fares starting at £14.99 one way.
