Most Cruise Passengers Target Two Trips Per Year, Survey Finds

New research has uncovered the optimal frequency of cruise holidays for the majority of passengers, revealing a significant trend towards multiple voyages each year. A comprehensive survey conducted by the travel agency Cruise.co.uk indicates that three quarters of cruise passengers are now aiming to embark on at least two cruises annually, highlighting a deepening commitment to seafaring vacations.

Growing Popularity Among Younger Demographics

While cruising has traditionally been associated with older travellers, the survey demonstrates a notable shift, with younger demographics driving the strongest growth in intent. Among passengers under the age of 35, 41 per cent expressed expectations to take a higher proportion of cruise holidays over the next two years. This marks an increase from 36 per cent recorded in the previous year, signalling a robust and expanding interest from a new generation of sailors.

First-Time Cruisers Returning for More

The survey also found that half of all first-time cruise passengers are already planning a second trip, underscoring the compelling appeal of the cruise experience. Overall, 35 per cent of respondents plan to take a higher proportion of cruises in the future, a substantial rise from just 17 per cent in 2025. This data points to a growing loyalty and satisfaction among those who have sampled life at sea.

Industry Insights and Executive Commentary

Tony Andrews, the managing director of Cruise.co.uk, commented on the findings, stating, "These results highlight just how embedded cruising has become for a large part of our customer base. Seeing such a high proportion of travellers taking multiple cruises each year, and planning to increase that further, speaks volumes about the value, variety and ease that a holiday at sea offers."

Andrews added, "What's particularly encouraging is the intent we're seeing from both younger and first-time cruisers. Once people experience how easy it is to visit several destinations in one trip, without sacrificing comfort or value for money, cruising quickly becomes the go-to holiday choice."

Global Passenger Numbers on the Rise

Supporting these survey results, industry data from the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) suggests a positive trajectory for global cruise passenger numbers. Figures indicate that the number of guests boarding cruise ships worldwide is projected to increase from approximately 37 million in 2025 to 42 million by 2028. Notably, a quarter of repeat travellers are already booking two or more cruises each year, reinforcing the trend towards frequent voyages.

Benefits Beyond the Obvious

Cruises offer a multitude of advantages, including the ability to visit multiple destinations in a single holiday and access to food, drink, and high-end entertainment. However, guests are discovering additional benefits that challenge old stereotypes.

Separate research conducted by Cruise118 reveals that while cruises were once perceived as slow-paced or sedentary, 53 per cent of guests report being more active at sea than at home. This increased activity is facilitated by onboard amenities such as gyms, fitness classes, swimming pools, walking excursions, and a variety of organised activities.

The timing is particularly favourable for cruise enthusiasts, with several new ships set to launch in the coming months. Notable additions include the Norwegian Aura and Royal Caribbean's Legend of the Seas, promising enhanced experiences and innovative features for travellers. This wave of new vessels aligns with the growing demand and evolving preferences of modern cruise passengers, ensuring that the industry continues to thrive and adapt.
