The Swiss hotel group famous for its indulgent daily 'Chocolate Hour' is finally coming to Britain. Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts has confirmed it will open its first UK property, taking over the Old Thorns Hotel & Resort in the picturesque Hampshire countryside, with an expected launch in late 2027.
A Sweet Swiss Tradition Arrives in Britain
For one hour each day, lobbies across Mövenpick's global portfolio of more than 130 hotels undergo a magical transformation. Guests are treated to an array of chocolate delights, from fountains for dipping fruit to rich hot cocoa and decadent truffles. This complimentary experience, known as 'Chocolate Hour', is a direct nod to the brand's Swiss heritage, founded in 1948 by restaurateur Ueli Prager.
Graham Dodd, Vice President of Development for UK & Ireland at Accor, which bought Mövenpick in 2018, stated: "Bringing Mövenpick to the UK marks an important step in strengthening our premium brand portfolio. It is a world-renowned brand recognised for its culinary excellence and environmental responsibility, which align perfectly with the expectations of UK guests."
The New Mövenpick Hampshire – Old Thorns
The new hotel will be situated on the 400-acre Old Thorns estate near Liphook, just minutes from the A3 and close to the South Downs National Park. The acquisition was made earlier this year by Dubai-based real estate firm, Select Group.
The resort will offer extensive facilities, including:
- A championship-level golf course.
- Over 2,500 square metres of conference and meeting space.
- Four distinct restaurants.
- A wellness centre with a new spa.
- A grand ballroom capable of hosting more than 500 event guests.
This expansion adds to Mövenpick's European presence, which includes properties in the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Germany.
Booking Details and Chocolate Celebrations
The existing Old Thorns Hotel will continue to operate until 31 March 2027, with 1 April 2027 set as the final check-out date. Current double room rates at the four-star hotel start from £89 per night, rising to £420 for New Year's Eve.
Beyond the daily chocolate ritual, Mövenpick is known for extra celebrations on World Chocolate Day each 7 July. Past events have seen spectacular creations, such as the Mövenpick Hotel Hamburg recreating the city's skyline entirely from chocolate. The brand also frequently collaborates with renowned chefs like Michelin-starred Vineet Bhatia for special culinary events.
Dodd added: "The Old Thorns estate provides an exceptional backdrop to introduce the brand in this incredibly important destination for Accor." For British travellers with a sweet tooth, a uniquely Swiss hospitality experience is now firmly on the horizon.
