This Luxury Marrakech Riad is the Perfect Base for Exploring the Vibrant Souks
At Riad Botanica, Daisy Lester discovers a serene hideaway with meticulously curated design, offering an oasis in the bustling Medina. Monday 26 January 2026 11:41 GMT.
Riad Botanica presents four beautifully themed suites alongside a dedicated family room, providing an intimate retreat within the historic heart of Marrakech.
Prime Location in the Historic Medina
Nestled within the core of Marrakech's ancient medina, this 10th-century aristocratic residence is accessed via an unassuming green door along one of the walled city's signature winding alleys. Inside, a stunning courtyard centred around a fragrant orange tree awaits. The property is perfectly positioned just a short stroll from the labyrinthine, vibrant souks and the bustling Jemaa el-Fnaa square.
Nearby attractions include the opulent Bacha Coffee, a cafe that transports visitors back to 1910, and the peaceful Jardin Secret, offering a welcome respite from the market's sensory overload. Popular dining and rooftop venues such as Le Jardin, El Fenn, and Nomad are all within a twenty-minute walk. Historical landmarks including the Ben Youssef Mosque, Dar El Bacha museum, and Bahia Palace are merely a stone's throw away. For convenience, the nearest road for taxis is just a four-minute walk from the riad.
A Carefully Curated Vibe and Atmosphere
The riad's distinctive decor masterfully blends Australian Art Deco influences with traditional Moroccan craftsmanship, a vision brought to life by owners Angela and Mohamed Mellak, an Australian-Moroccan couple. The courtyard serves as the property's beating heart, featuring a small, refreshing pool and an airy, green-filled atmosphere that creates a shady, private, and peaceful daytime retreat.
A sophisticated monochrome colour palette runs throughout, seen in the rattan seating, striped loungers, and mosaic-tiled floor. The floor's star and cross pattern is a thoughtful design element representing harmony between Islam and Christianity, nodding to Marrakech's rich, blended cultural heritage. Local artistry shines in features like the ornate cedar doors, while every detail, from the botanical-inspired room colours to the Moroccan-inspired Art Deco wallpaper by Australian designer Florence Broadhurst, has been meticulously considered.
Owing to its low guest capacity, the public areas maintain a calming ambience. The rooftop hosts a small bar with shaded seating for meals and cushioned beds for sunbathing, attracting a mix of nomadic solo travellers, couples, and families.
Intimate and Insightful Service
Manned by just seven staff members, the service at Riad Botanica feels intimately attentive. The front-of-house team is warm and welcoming without being overbearing, a perfect balance for the compact public spaces. The owners frequently move through the riad, offering insightful and knowledgeable guidance on the local area. Their personalised recommendations, such as the ideal time to visit the viral Bacha coffee spot to avoid crowds or the best local artisans for authentic shopping, are invaluable.
Unique and Vibrant Bedrooms
The riad offers five entirely unique rooms, each blending vibrant Moroccan design with laidback Australian and European details. All rooms feature distinctive, 1960s-era wallpapers by Florence Broadhurst, with each varying in size and colour palette.
The Zahara suite, the largest, is located on the first floor and includes a second bedroom with two adult-size bunk beds, a living area with a sofa, and a kitchenette. It is characterised by a picturesque Juliet window overlooking the courtyard's orange tree. The Rose Beldi and Orange Blossom rooms also provide ample space for longer stays. Thoughtful touches include locally-sourced toiletries from the Marrakech brand Natus, while hanging light fixtures, Berber rugs, and leather pouffes are sourced directly from the souks.
Fresh, Local Food and Drink
A fresh, three-course breakfast is included and served on the sun-drenched rooftop. Options range from homemade granola, yoghurt, and fresh fruit to Moroccan baghrir pancakes with jams and whipped cream, accompanied by eggs prepared to preference and served with Moroccan harcha. To minimise waste, lunch and dinner must be booked in advance, as the riad sources seasonal produce locally.
The menu features classic Moroccan fare like aubergine or lentil salads, houmus, and rich slow-cooked tagines, including vibrant vegetarian or traditional chicken and beef options. It also caters to varied tastes with items like Caesar salads and club sandwiches. While the riad does not serve alcohol, it offers refreshing mocktails, fresh juices, tea, and coffee.
Immersive Experiences Over Traditional Facilities
Instead of a traditional hammam spa or gym, Riad Botanica focuses on unique experiences that foster a deeper connection with Marrakech. The small pool, flanked by cushioned sun beds, offers a relaxing spot for summer dips.
Highlights include monthly "storyteller" dinners, where guests dine under the stars while a local female storyteller brings Morocco's rich oral heritage to life. The riad also arranges yoga and pilates in the courtyard, sunrise balloon rides facing the Atlas Mountains, and coffee tours to Bacha Coffee. The immersive "Muse Shopping Tour" provides an insider's guide to the souks, leading guests to local workshops, hidden flea markets, and food trucks for unique finds like jewellery, hand-painted plates, and ceramics.
Accessibility and Practical Information
Riad Botanica offers two accessible rooms on the ground floor with easy wheelchair access, fully accessible bathrooms featuring roll-in showers and grab bars, and adjustable bed layouts. Wheelchair-accessible seating is available by the pool, and there is level access from the street. Meals can be served in the courtyard upon request.
The riad does not accept pets unless the entire property is exclusively booked. Check-in is from 2pm (earlier if the room is ready), and check-out is by 11am. The Zahara room is family-friendly, featuring a double bed and two adult-size bunk beds, with children's meal options available.
At a glance: The best thing is the gorgeous design details and prime location. It is perfect for solo travellers and those seeking unique experiences, but not ideal for large groups. The perfect Instagram shot can be captured from the second-floor mezzanine looking out to the Juliet window and orange tree.
