As the new year approaches, Ryanair, Europe's largest airline, has unveiled its selection of must-visit destinations for 2026, offering British travellers inspiration for their next affordable getaway.
European Gems: History and Value
The budget carrier is championing several European cities it believes are set to shine. Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, is highlighted for its compelling mix of rich history and contemporary appeal. Visitors can explore its medieval Old Town, with Ryanair set to operate 33 routes to the city next summer, calling it "one of Europe’s most exciting city break destinations".
Further south, Tirana, Albania, earns a spot for its vibrant restaurant scene, fascinating architecture, and excellent value. Recognised as Europe's best-value city for UK tourists by the Post Office in 2021, Tirana promises an "unforgettable travel experience" with dramatic mountain backdrops. From April, Ryanair will run a staggering 450 flights per week from its airport.
Coastal Charm and North African Culture
Italy's Adriatic coast is represented by Pescara, praised for its dreamy shorelines and historic urban centres. Ryanair describes it as "one of Europe’s most captivating destinations".
Venturing beyond Europe, Rabat, the capital of Morocco, is labelled an "unmissable destination for affordable travel and authentic experiences". Its popularity is surging, featuring in Skyscanner's 2026 Travel Trends Report with an 87 per cent increase in search interest.
Hidden Treasures from Poland to Portugal
Completing the list is Gdańsk, Poland, hailed as "the jewel of Poland’s Baltic coast". It offers a picturesque Old Town and a deep maritime history, with Wizz Air cabin crew member Miley Adison previously endorsing it as a festive hidden gem.
While not on Ryanair's list, Guimarães in northern Portugal also receives a notable mention, having been included in the BBC's '20 best places to travel in 2026'. Celebrated as Portugal's birthplace and first capital, it boasts a beautifully preserved medieval core, cobbled streets, and a lively culture.
This curated list underscores a continuing trend towards discovering affordable, culture-rich city breaks beyond the traditional tourist trails, with major airlines expanding routes to meet growing demand.
