As the UK shivers through a gloomy January, millions are turning their thoughts to sunnier climes, sparking a major boom in holiday bookings. The global travel app Skyscanner has responded to this surge by launching a comprehensive new package holiday search feature across its desktop, mobile, and app platforms.
January Surge and a Surprising Generational Shift
January is traditionally the busiest month for planning getaways, with a predicted £4 billion set to be spent on UK package holidays. Skyscanner's own data reveals that demand for these all-in-one trips has skyrocketed by 113 per cent since the start of the year. New consumer research commissioned by the company shows that more than half of UK travellers are considering a package holiday in 2024, with cost savings being the primary motivator.
A notable trend emerging from the data is a generational shift in preference. Contrary to the stereotype that package holidays are favoured by older generations, the research found that a third of Gen Z and over a quarter of Millennials are more likely to opt for a package deal in 2026 compared to their older counterparts. Skyscanner attributes this to the appeal of cost certainty, reduced complexity, and the sheer convenience of managing a single booking for flights and accommodation.
How the New Search Tool Works
The newly launched package holiday search is designed to simplify the planning process. It scours offers from the biggest UK providers, comparing 25 million packages to highlight the best deals. Travellers can search for all-inclusive escapes, beach holidays, and city breaks by entering their desired location and dates.
The platform allows users to refine their search using filters such as hotel star ratings and board type. Once a suitable package is selected, customers are seamlessly redirected to the provider's own website to complete their booking. Importantly, all packages listed on Skyscanner are ATOL protected, offering financial security.
Substantial Savings on Offer for Savvy Travellers
According to Skyscanner, using the new comparison tool can lead to significant savings, with travellers able to save 30 per cent on average. Certain long-haul destinations offer particularly good value for money right now.
For instance, a seven-night stay in June at the four-star Tukan Hotel Playa del Carmen in Cancun, Mexico, can be found from £808. Those dreaming of Marrakech can book four nights in September at the five-star Grand Mogador Agdal & Spa from just £353. For a European city break, deals include five nights in June at the four-star Hotel Imperatori in Rome from £316.
A Skyscanner spokesperson commented: "January is the busiest month of the year for travel planning, and who isn't dreaming of palm trees and sun-soaked beaches with this wintry weather! Our research shows that for many, finding that perfect holiday can feel overwhelming, with value for money top of mind. We're excited to bring our industry-leading price comparison tech to packages. With more choice than ever, travellers need an easier way to compare all options in one place to find great deals without the hassle."
