The island of Sveti Stefan, famous for its glittering pink sands and once a haven for Hollywood royalty like Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren, and Marilyn Monroe, is set to reopen after a significant renovation. The island has undergone various transformations, from a fortress protecting Montenegro's shores to a fishing village, but its most glamorous period was in the mid-20th century when the Yugoslav government relocated residents and built a luxury hotel.
History and Closure
The hotel's winding lanes and stone cottages were preserved, attracting A-list celebrities. However, in 2021, protests over the privatisation of the island's beaches led to the hotel's closure. The resort has remained shuttered since then.
Reopening as Aman Sveti Stefan
Now, the resort will reopen as Aman Sveti Stefan on July 1. The stone cottages will be restored to modern standards, and a former royal-owned villa on the mainland will be transformed into lavish suites. The island is connected to the mainland by a narrow isthmus of pink sand and stones.
Beaches and Amenities
There are two beaches: Kings Beach, open to the public, and Queens Beach, exclusive to locals and hotel guests. The pink pebbly sands lead to turquoise waters with views of green mountains and red-roofed houses. Guests can also enjoy the Aman spa in historic Villa Miločer, featuring hydrotherapy suites, wellness treatments, and an indoor pool overlooking the sea.
Exploring Budva Riviera
Sveti Stefan is located on the Budva Riviera. Boat tours explore the bay and traditional seaside villages. Visitors can also take boat trips from Budva to see the island from the sea and swim around it. Budva, known as the party capital of the Balkans, offers an iconic old town with shops, cafés, and cobbled streets. Nightlife includes beachfront bars at Slovenska Plaza and mega-clubs like Top Hill, where parties start around 1am and continue until dawn.
