A devastating avalanche in the Spanish Pyrenees has claimed the lives of three people and left another hospitalised with hypothermia. The tragedy occurred earlier today at the popular Panticosa ski resort.
Details of the Avalanche Incident
The group of skiers was caught in the avalanche at approximately 1pm local time on Monday, 29th December 2025. They were on their way down from the Tablato peak, an area close to the border with France. Reports indicate that while three individuals lost their lives, two others in the group managed to escape relatively unharmed. The surviving woman was transported to hospital for treatment.
Rescue Operation and Avalanche Warnings
Spanish mountain rescue teams, assisted by a helicopter, immediately launched a search and recovery operation in the wake of the slide. The rescue workers successfully located the group in the challenging snow conditions.
The incident happened despite active warnings. The Spanish weather agency, Aemet, had issued a Level 2 avalanche warning for the region. Similarly, across the border, Meteo France has widespread avalanche alerts in place across the Pyrenees mountain range.

Panticosa is a renowned area for winter sports, described by Spain's tourism board as being "surrounded by beautiful and majestic mountains." The resort is famed for its spa and historic luxury hotels and was once a holiday destination for royalty.
Its winter sports facilities are extensive, with pistes accessible from a wide esplanade by the riverbank. The area, dotted with lakes and peaks exceeding 3,000 metres, is a major draw for skiers and mountain sports enthusiasts throughout the year.
