Oil Prices Surge Past $100 as US Strikes Iran and Conflict Escalates in Middle East

As American and Israeli military strikes continue to pound the Islamic Republic of Iran, and Iran retaliates by attacking Persian Gulf shipping lanes and energy infrastructure, oil prices have soared back above $100 a barrel. With no immediate sign of an end to the hostilities, the conflict is causing widespread disruption and humanitarian crises across the region.

Intense Strikes and Regional Fallout

Intense aerial strikes have targeted Tehran and areas surrounding Iran's capital, while Iran has persisted in striking neighboring Arab Gulf States. U.S. President Donald Trump has vowed to "finish the job," even as reports suggest Iran is "virtually destroyed." According to the Pentagon, the first week of the war has cost the United States a staggering $11.3 billion.

The United Nations refugee agency reports that up to 3.2 million people in Iran have been displaced due to the conflict. Additionally, authorities in Lebanon state that 800,000 individuals have been forced from their homes as Israel's military destroys buildings linked to Iran-backed Hezbollah militants.

Debris from Interception Causes Fire in Dubai

Early Friday, thick black smoke rose over Dubai's skyline following what authorities described as a fire in an industrial area of the city-state. An Associated Press journalist observed the blaze in Dubai's Al Quoz neighborhood, with bystanders gathering to watch the smoke. Police prevented the journalist from approaching the site, located in a cul de sac.

The Dubai Media Office, which issues statements for the government, explained that "debris from a successful interception caused a minor incident on the façade of a building in central Dubai." No injuries were reported, although black smoke was visible as far as the sail-shaped Burj al-Arab luxury hotel.

Israeli Strikes Hit New Areas in Beirut, Killing One

An Israeli strike early Friday targeted a car in Jnah, a coastal neighborhood in southwestern Beirut, resulting in one fatality, according to the Lebanese health ministry. Separately, another Israeli strike hit an apartment in the Nabaa neighborhood, engulfing it in flames, as reported by local media.

Nabaa, situated on Beirut's northern outskirts within the densely populated Burj Hammoud district, is home to a sizable Armenian community. No casualties were immediately reported from this incident. This marks the first time such an area has been struck in this conflict or during the 2024 war between Hezbollah and Israel.

Following the strikes, the Israeli army stated it had targeted a Hezbollah member in Beirut. Both neighborhoods are located far from the southern suburbs of Beirut, which the Israeli military has declared unsafe and issued evacuation notices for.

Missile Attack on Israel Injures 30

Israel's Magen David Adom ambulance service reported that approximately 30 people were injured in a missile attack on Zarzir, a city about 100 kilometers (60 miles) north of Jerusalem near the border with Lebanon. Most of the wounds were described as resulting from broken glass caused by the attack.

Hezbollah claimed responsibility early Friday, stating it had fired several rocket salvos toward Israel.

Saudi Arabia Downs 38 Drones in Hours

Saudi Arabia's defense ministry announced early Friday that its air defenses had intercepted 38 drones headed toward the kingdom's Eastern Province within just a few hours. This represents a larger than usual number of aerial threats for the country.

As the war with Iran rages on, sites in Saudi Arabia, including the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh, oil infrastructure, and a military base hosting U.S. troops, have been targeted.

French Soldier Killed in Attack in Iraq

French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed on Friday that a French soldier was killed in an attack targeting Irbil in Iraq's northern Kurdish region. Macron identified the soldier as Chief Warrant Officer Arnaud Frion of the 7th Battalion of Chasseurs Alpins from Varces.

In a statement on social platform X, Macron expressed, "To his family, to his brothers in arms, I want to express all the affection and solidarity of the nation. Several of our soldiers have been wounded. France stands by their side and with their loved ones."

France had earlier reported that six soldiers were injured in a drone attack in Irbil. French troops are deployed in Iraq as part of a multinational counterterrorism mission supporting local forces in their fight against Islamic State militants.
