The cult-favorite convenience store chain Buc-ee's has achieved a remarkable milestone with its first Ohio location, generating over $1 million in sales on its opening day. The store, situated in Huber Heights, opened on April 6 and attracted thousands of eager customers, some of whom camped overnight to secure a spot in line. Local officials described the event as record-breaking, with Mayor Jeff Gore noting on Facebook that sales soared past the million-dollar mark within hours.
Record-Breaking Debut
Buc-ee's, known for its bargain fuel, extensive selection of beef jerky, iconic brisket sandwiches, and beaver-themed merchandise, has built a devoted following since its founding in 1982. The Huber Heights location, off State Route 235 near Interstate 70, is now the chain's northernmost outpost. Company executives reportedly stated that no previous grand opening has matched the sales volume seen in Ohio.
Expansion Plans
Ohio is set to welcome a second Buc-ee's in Mansfield, near the intersection of Interstate 71 and Ohio 39, after receiving planning approval earlier this month. The chain is aggressively expanding across the United States, with plans for new locations in Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, and Kentucky by 2026. By the end of that year, Buc-ee's aims to open four more iconic travel centers, with an additional 15 planned in subsequent years.
Economic Impact
The opening weekend saw hotels in Huber Heights and surrounding areas fully booked, signaling a potential tourism boost for the region. While officials caution that it is too early to measure the full financial impact, the early indicators suggest that Buc-ee's will be a significant economic driver. The chain's travel centers, often described as the 'Disneyland of gas stations,' feature over 100 fuel pumps, award-winning restrooms, and a vast array of snacks and merchandise.
Local Opposition
Not all communities are welcoming Buc-ee's with open arms. In Stafford, Virginia, a proposed 120-pump, 74,000-square-foot location has sparked backlash, with a Change.org petition gathering over 2,500 signatures. Residents have voiced strong opposition at public meetings, reflecting the chain's polarizing impact.
Fan Favorites
Buc-ee's has cultivated a cult following, particularly among Gen-Z, thanks to its social media-friendly snacks and oversized scale. Popular items include Sausage on a Stick, Dr Pepper Icees, and an entire wall of jerky. The chain's Beaver Nuggets, a caramelized corn puff snack, and freshly made barbecue sandwiches are also customer favorites. The Fort Pierce, Florida, location, announced in January, is expected to span 76,000 square feet, surpassing the current largest store in Luling, Texas.
