A cargo ship carrying hundreds of metric tons of soda from Albania to Ukraine struck rocks and sank off the Greek island of Andros, authorities confirmed on Wednesday. All nine crew members were successfully rescued.
Rescue Operation Details
The Vanuatu-flagged freighter, identified as Corsage C by the Marine Traffic ship tracker, ran aground under unclear circumstances. Two crew members were pulled from the sea, while the remaining seven were recovered from a rocky area on Andros. The crew, consisting of eight Turkish nationals and one Azerbaijani national, were reported to be in good health after being transported to the island's clinic for assessment.
Environmental Precautions
A Greek shipping ministry official, speaking anonymously, stated that while no visible signs of pollution were immediately apparent, two anti-pollution coast guard vessels, alongside two others carrying specialised equipment, would preemptively deploy a sea barrier to contain any potential spill.
The ship's captain confirmed that every individual on board was accounted for following the incident. The cause of the vessel running aground remains under investigation.
