A significant spill of hazardous chemicals has caused major disruption on a key British motorway, forcing a full closure and prompting a large-scale emergency response.
Motorway Closed Following Serious Collision
The M40 southbound remains closed between Junction 8A for Oxford and Junction 6 for Watlington. This drastic measure was implemented after a tanker collided with a car at 7.45pm on Monday night. The incident led to a large quantity of Bitumen, a hazardous material used in road surfacing, pouring across the carriageway.
Specialist Clean-Up Operation Underway
Emergency services, including police and fire crews, attended the scene to secure the area. Due to the dangerous nature of the spilled substance, specialist clean-up teams have been called in to handle the decontamination process. A spokesperson confirmed that, fortunately, no injuries were reported from the crash.
Major Travel Disruption for Motorists
The ongoing closure is causing severe delays for Tuesday morning commuters and other road users. National Highways has advised drivers to avoid the area entirely and to seek alternative routes for their journeys. Motorists are experiencing major delays as a direct result of the incident, with no firm timeline yet given for the full reopening of the motorway.
