Perth Airport has unveiled ambitious expansion plans to accommodate a surge in passenger numbers, with new terminals and upgraded facilities set to be completed by 2027. The announcement comes as Western Australia experiences a significant post-pandemic travel boom, with domestic and international passenger numbers exceeding pre-COVID levels.
Key Features of the Expansion
The expansion includes the construction of a new terminal dedicated to international flights, as well as upgrades to existing domestic terminals. The project aims to increase the airport's capacity by 50%, allowing it to handle up to 20 million passengers annually. Additional parking facilities, improved road access, and enhanced retail and dining options are also part of the plan.
Economic Impact
The expansion is expected to create thousands of jobs during construction and operation phases, boosting the local economy. Western Australian Premier Roger Cook hailed the project as a vital step for the state's tourism and business sectors. “This investment will secure Perth’s position as a gateway to Asia and beyond,” he said.
Environmental Considerations
The airport has committed to incorporating sustainable design elements, including solar panels, energy-efficient lighting, and water recycling systems. The new terminals will target a 5-star Green Star rating from the Green Building Council of Australia.
Construction is slated to begin in early 2025, with the first phase operational by 2027. The total cost is estimated at AU$3 billion, funded through a combination of airport revenues and private investment.
