Autistic Boy Found Dead in Bin Bag: Mother Charged with Murder
A five-year-old non-verbal autistic boy has been found dead and dumped in a bin bag, with authorities revealing he was severely malnourished at the time of his death. The tragic discovery has led to murder charges against his mother, Jalynda Smith, 36, who is also accused of tampering with evidence.
Discovery of the Body
The remains of the young boy were found wrapped in towels and blankets inside a bin bag along the Lillian Highway in Perdido Bay, Florida, in February. The location was just half an hour from the family home. Police reported that the child weighed only 20 pounds, with his bones visible and ribs starkly protruding, indicating severe malnutrition and neglect.
Upgraded Charges and Investigation
Initially, Smith was charged with aggravated negligent manslaughter of a child, but new evidence prompted an upgrade to first-degree murder and evidence tampering. According to arrest reports, Smith allegedly tried to cover her tracks by instructing her sister via encrypted messages on Telegram not to inform their mother or the police about their communication.
In one message, Smith claimed, "I came into the house and he was not breathing," but police allege this was part of an attempt to conceal the crime. The sister grew concerned after visiting Smith's home and finding it freezing cold with missing bedsheets, leading her to contact authorities.
History of Neglect and Medical Concerns
The boy had a documented history of health issues, including a diagnosis of "Failure to thrive" in 2021, which required annual medical check-ups for weight gain. At his last appointment in December 2025, he weighed 30 pounds, meaning he lost a third of his body weight in just over a month—a loss doctors described as incredibly concerning.
Social services had been involved twice before: in 2022, Smith was arrested for neglect after leaving her son home alone in a dirty nappy, and in 2025, she was accused of leaving him unattended while she worked. She completed a parental skills course after the first incident.
Legal Proceedings and Current Status
Smith is being held without bail at Escambia County Jail since her arrest. Her trial is scheduled to begin on 1 June 2026. Police affidavits state that the child showed clear signs of neglect and dehydration, with his torso and extremities lacking meaningful muscle and his abdomen sunken inward.
The case has highlighted severe lapses in child protection, with authorities emphasizing the tragic outcome of alleged starvation or medical negligence. The community remains shocked by the brutality of the crime and the young victim's suffering.
