Shreveport Domestic Tragedy: Man Kills 8 Children, Shoots Two Women

In a horrific domestic incident that has stunned the nation, a man in Shreveport, Louisiana, killed eight children and shot two women in a violent rampage across two homes. Authorities have confirmed this as the deadliest shooting in the United States in more than two years, with the community reeling from the loss.

A Community in Mourning

Officials and relatives reported that the attacker, identified as 31-year-old Shamar Elkins, killed seven of his own children and one other child, while also shooting his wife and another woman. The violence erupted before sunrise on Sunday in a neighborhood south of downtown Shreveport, a city of approximately 180,000 residents in northwestern Louisiana.

At a news conference outside one of the affected residences, Mayor Tom Arceneaux expressed profound grief, stating, "This is a tragic situation — maybe the worst tragic situation we’ve ever had." The community responded with an outpouring of support, as mourners laid flowers outside the single-story house on 79th Street and held a candlelight vigil in a nearby parking lot.

Kimberlin Jackson, who attended the vigil, captured the emotional impact, saying, "It just makes you take your children and hug them and hold them and tell them how much you love them."

Details of the Attack

According to police spokesperson Chris Bordelon, the violence began when Elkins shot a woman at one home before driving to a second location. There, seven children were killed inside the house, and one was found dead on the roof after apparently attempting to escape. Another child jumped from the roof and was hospitalized, expected to survive.

State Representative Tammy Phelps revealed that some children tried to flee through the back door, adding, "I can’t even imagine what the police officers, first responders actually dealt with when they got here today." Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith echoed the sentiment, stating, "I just don’t know what to say, my heart is just taken aback."

The victims, aged 3 to 11 years old, included three boys and five girls, as confirmed by the Caddo Parish Coroner’s office. Crystal Brown, a cousin of one of the wounded women, described the children as "happy kids, very friendly, very sweet."

Domestic Dispute Turns Deadly

Bordelon emphasized that detectives are confident the shooting was "entirely a domestic incident," though the exact trigger remains unclear. Elkins had a prior arrest in a 2019 firearms case, but no other domestic violence issues were known to authorities.

Brown provided context, explaining that Elkins and his wife were in the midst of separating and were due in court on Monday. The couple had been arguing about the separation prior to the shooting. "He murdered his children," Brown said. "He shot his wife." Elkins had four children with his wife and three with another woman who lived nearby and was also shot. All the children were together at one house at the time of the attack.

Aftermath and National Context

The gunman died after a police pursuit that ended with officers firing on him. This tragedy marks the deadliest shooting in the U.S. since January 2024, when eight people were killed in a Chicago suburb, according to a database maintained by The Associated Press and USA Today in partnership with Northeastern University.

As investigations continue, the Shreveport community grapples with the profound loss, highlighting the devastating consequences of domestic violence and the urgent need for support and prevention measures.
