A Miami woman has been arrested after allegedly luring a man to her luxury apartment through Instagram messages and then robbing him with two accomplices, police said.
Incident Details
Nicole Cano, 30, was taken into custody on May 4 in connection with an incident that occurred on April 11. According to police, Cano invited the victim to her high-rise apartment at Paraiso Bayviews Condos, purportedly for drinks. The unidentified man arrived shortly after 8 p.m. that evening.
Confrontation on the Balcony
While the victim was on Cano's balcony overlooking Biscayne Bay, two women he did not know approached him from the bedroom. Police stated that Cano and her alleged accomplices then confronted the unsuspecting victim, demanding he hand over his money. The man reportedly told them he had no cash on him.
When the victim attempted to leave, the women forcefully prevented him, allegedly stating he was 'going to pay.' A struggle ensued, during which the three women crowded the victim and attempted to snatch a gold chain from his neck.
Theft and Escape
Miami Police Officer Michael Vega told NBC 6, 'They tried to get his gold chain. They were not successful. But, they did take a crucifix that he had on his chain that was valued at over $300.' The victim eventually managed to flee the apartment complex and screamed for help, according to arrest reports.
Identification and Arrest
The victim later identified Cano in a police photo lineup. She was taken into custody and provided a statement. Police said Cano admitted to initiating the meeting but denied robbing the man. The apartment she allegedly used to lure the victim could cost up to $15,000 per month, according to the condominium complex's website.
Charges and Legal Consequences
Cano has been charged with strong-armed robbery and false imprisonment. Under Florida law, strong-armed robbery carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison, while false imprisonment is punishable by up to five years and a fine of up to $10,000. Cano is being held at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, with bond set at $7,500 after her court appearance on Tuesday.
Investigation Ongoing
It remains unclear if police have identified the two other suspects involved. Officer Vega urged the public, 'We ask anybody that has information or who is also a victim of this female or of any other to please contact the City of Miami Police Department and give us that information.' The Daily Mail has contacted the Miami Police Department for further comment.
