A 14-year-old boy has been formally charged in connection with the tragic death of teenager Jacob Calland, who lost his life following a collision involving an e-scooter and a car in Manchester last year.
Charges Filed Following Fatal Incident
The young defendant, who cannot be named for legal reasons due to his age, faces serious allegations including causing death by dangerous driving. The charges stem from the devastating incident that occurred in the Wythenshawe area of Manchester on 19th March 2025, which claimed the life of 14-year-old Jacob Calland.
Multiple Driving Offences Alleged
Greater Manchester Police have confirmed the boy has been charged with three separate offences relating to the fatal crash. Alongside the primary charge of causing death by dangerous driving, authorities have also brought charges for causing death while driving without a valid licence and causing death while driving without appropriate insurance coverage.
The tragic collision occurred at approximately 4pm on that fateful March afternoon, when the e-scooter being ridden by the teenagers was involved in a serious incident with a car. Emergency services attended the scene, but despite their efforts, Jacob Calland succumbed to his injuries.
Court Proceedings Scheduled
The accused teenager has been released on bail pending his next court appearance, which is scheduled for 24th February 2026 at Manchester Youth Court. This specialised court handles cases involving defendants under the age of 18, reflecting the juvenile status of both the accused and the victim in this heartbreaking case.
This development marks a significant step in the legal process following an incident that has highlighted ongoing concerns about e-scooter safety and regulation on UK roads. The case continues to develop as authorities work through the judicial process.
