Police are actively seeking a 17-year-old suspect on attempted murder charges following a violent shooting incident that erupted early Sunday in a bustling nightlife district adjacent to the University of Iowa campus, authorities confirmed on Wednesday.
Multiple Victims Injured in Crowded Area
Five individuals sustained gunshot wounds during the altercation, with three of them identified as University of Iowa students. One female victim remains in critical condition after suffering a life-threatening head injury, according to Iowa City Police Chief Dustin Liston.
Chaotic Scene Involving Dozens
Reports indicate that as many as 40 people may have been involved in the initial fight that preceded the shooting. Officers were dispatched to the scene and arrived within an astonishing 45 seconds, Liston stated.
After allegedly disengaging from the other participants, the suspect fired six rounds into a densely populated pedestrian mall area, which is lined with shops, bars, and restaurants, creating a scene of panic and chaos.
Suspect to Be Charged as an Adult
The minor, hailing from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, will face charges as an adult, in compliance with Iowa state law that mandates this for forcible felony charges against individuals aged 16 or older, explained Rachel Zimmermann Smith, the Johnson County attorney.
Upon apprehension, the suspect will be charged with five counts of attempted murder, with additional charges anticipated as the investigation progresses. Authorities have already executed approximately three dozen search warrants in connection with the case.
Victims Not Targeted, Investigation Ongoing
Chief Liston emphasized that the five victims were not the intended targets of the shooting and had no apparent affiliation with the preceding fight. He detailed the injuries of the other four victims: one was struck in the arm and chest, two were hit in one or both legs, and one sustained a wound to the side of the stomach.
Of these, one victim remains hospitalized in stable condition, while three have been released. Liston urged anyone with information about the incident or the suspect to come forward, vowing that police will work tirelessly to ensure full accountability for those responsible.
