Police in Barcelona, Spain, have launched a comprehensive search operation for James "Jimmy" Gracey, a 20-year-old American student from Illinois reported missing this week. The University of Alabama undergraduate was visiting friends studying abroad in the Catalan capital when he vanished after a night out.
Details of the Disappearance
Gracey was last seen at approximately 3 a.m. on Tuesday outside Shoko nightclub, located near Barceloneta Beach. According to family members from Elmhurst, Illinois—a suburb approximately 19 miles west of Chicago—he separated from friends at that time and never returned to the accommodation he was sharing with them.
When last observed, Gracey was wearing a white shirt with dark pants and a distinctive chain featuring a gold rhinestone cross. His disappearance has been described by family as "completely out of character" for the responsible student who regularly maintained contact with loved ones.
Search Efforts and Community Response
Regional Catalan police confirmed on Thursday that search operations include both aerial patrols and underwater sweeps in the coastal area. Friends remaining in Barcelona have begun distributing missing person posters featuring Gracey's photograph and details of his last known whereabouts.
"Jimmy is a kind, responsible, and devoted son and brother," the Gracey family stated in an official release shared with The Associated Press. "We are working closely with local authorities and are incredibly grateful for the support we have received. We ask that you keep Jimmy in your thoughts as we continue to do everything we can to bring him home safely."

Gracey, an active member of the Theta Chi fraternity, holds two leadership positions within the University of Alabama chapter. International fraternity CEO Michael Mayer confirmed ongoing coordination efforts, stating, "Since learning of his disappearance, the International Fraternity has been in regular communication with federal lawmakers, the University of Alabama, and our chapter members, including those who remain in Barcelona searching tirelessly for Jimmy."
