At approximately 2pm on Tuesday, armed police officers swiftly surrounded a manhole on Great Charles Queensway in Birmingham city centre. The suspects, who were dressed in orange high-visibility overalls, had initially been flagged down by vigilant members of the public, raising the alarm about their suspicious activities.
Footage from the arrests vividly shows officers shouting commands for the gang to 'come up now' as they positioned themselves around the tunnel entrance. The scene intensified as policemen ran towards the manhole with their sniffer dogs, the animals barking aggressively down the hole at the so-called 'workers' below.
Dramatic Emergence and Arrests
One of the men was seen slowly emerging up a single ladder from the depths of the tunnel. At this critical point, an officer urgently requested, 'sarge, can you get us some light as well', underscoring the challenging conditions of the operation.
A policeman then issued a stark warning: 'Police with a dog! Come out now or the dog's coming in!' As the alleged thief continued his ascent, another officer calmly instructed, 'Good evening, keep coming up the ladder.'
The suspect was instructed to hold up his hands while climbing the ladder, a manoeuvre he performed with evident difficulty. This meticulous approach ensured a controlled and safe arrest procedure.

Following the operation, three men were arrested in connection with the incident. Authorities also seized a van that was loaded with cables, presumably the proceeds of the alleged theft.
