Chorley Street Evacuated After Grenade Found in Police Chase

A quiet residential street in Lancashire was evacuated and bomb disposal experts were called in after a suspected grenade was discovered at a property in Chorley. The incident followed a dramatic police pursuit in Preston where a driver pointed what appeared to be a handgun at officers.

Police Pursuit and Arrest

At approximately 9:40pm on Sunday, June 21, Lancashire Police officers spotted a red Ford Fiesta on New Hall Lane in Preston with what they believed to be illegal number plates. When officers signalled for the vehicle to stop, it failed to comply and a pursuit ensued. The chase concluded on Brockholes Brow, where tactical contact was used to stop the vehicle before it could escape onto the M6 motorway.

The driver, a 20-year-old man from Chorley, exited the car and pointed what looked like a handgun at police. It was later confirmed to be a BB gun. Officers also discovered he was carrying two knives along with the replica weapon. He was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm, failing to stop, possession of an offensive weapon, and failure to provide a breath sample.

Passengers Also Arrested

Three passengers were also detained: two men from Preston, aged 20 and 21, and a 21-year-old woman, also from Preston. They were arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon. All four individuals remain in custody as investigations continue.

Grenade Discovery in Chorley

As part of their enquiries, police conducted searches at a property on Kirkstall Close in Chorley, a cul-de-sac in the town. During the search, they located what is believed to be a grenade. As a precaution, several properties in the area were evacuated, and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) experts were called in to assess and remove the device.

A Lancashire Police spokesperson said: “Whilst conducting searches at a property in Kirkstall Close, Chorley, as part of our enquiries, we located what is thought to be a grenade. As a precaution, some properties in the area have been evacuated and our Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) colleagues have been contacted and are in attendance.”

Public Reassurance and Ongoing Investigation

Police have stated there is no believed risk to the public at this time. An investigation is ongoing, and officers are conducting reassurance patrols in the area. The spokesperson added: “We know this may be concerning to hear about, but we want to reassure you that we will have officers in and around the area conducting reassurance patrols. If you have any concerns, or any information you feel could assist us, please don't hesitate to approach them as they conduct their duties. Alternatively, you can get in touch by calling 101 quoting log 1457 of June 21.”

Authorities are also appealing for anyone with information or footage to come forward. The incident has drawn significant attention due to the combination of a police chase, a fake firearm, and the discovery of a suspected explosive device in a residential neighbourhood.
