Chris Brown Appears in Court Over Alleged Nightclub Bottle Attack
Chris Brown in Court Over Nightclub Attack Allegations

Grammy-winning R&B artist Chris Brown made an appearance at Southwark Crown Court this morning, as proceedings commenced ahead of his trial concerning allegations of a violent and unprovoked assault on a music producer at an exclusive London nightclub.

Court Hearing Details and Charges

The 36-year-old singer, dressed in a white jacket and grey trousers, attended the hearing alongside his co-defendant, US rapper Omololu Akinlolu, who is also known by his stage name HoodyBaby. During the brief session, Brown spoke only to confirm his identity before the court.

Prosecutors allege that the incident took place in the early hours of February 19, 2023, at the upscale Tape nightclub located in Hanover Square, Mayfair. The court has heard that music producer Abraham Diaw was reportedly standing at the bar when Brown is accused of striking him multiple times over the head with a tequila bottle.

Specific Allegations and Legal Proceedings

CCTV footage is said to depict Brown chasing Mr Diaw through the venue before proceeding to kick and punch him as he lay on the floor. The prosecution has characterised the alleged assault as entirely unprovoked.

Chris Brown has entered a plea of not guilty to all charges brought against him. These include attempting to cause grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and possessing an offensive weapon, specifically the tequila bottle used in the alleged attack.

Omololu Akinlolu, aged 38, similarly denies charges of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm and a separate count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm against Mr Diaw.

Case History and Bail Conditions

The two lesser charges against Brown – assault and possession of an offensive weapon – were formally added in June of last year to the more serious GBH count, to which he had already pleaded not guilty. Both defendants are expected to face a week-long trial scheduled to begin in October 2026.

Brown was initially arrested in May last year at the five-star Lowry Hotel in Salford, following his arrival in the UK via private jet as part of preparations for his European tour. He was held in custody for nearly a week before being released after agreeing to pay a substantial £5 million security fee, which serves as a financial guarantee to ensure his return to court.

Travel Restrictions and Ongoing Requirements

The court granted Brown special permission last October to temporarily reclaim his passport in order to perform on his Breezy Bowl XX world tour, though he was required to surrender his travel documents upon arrival in each country. He is now permitted to leave the UK again ahead of his next court appearance, but must adhere to specific bail conditions.

These conditions include notifying the court of the address where he will reside, refraining from any contact with co-defendant Akinlolu or alleged victim Mr Diaw, and avoiding attendance at the Tape nightclub where the incident is said to have occurred.

Public Appearance and Fan Support

Approximately ten fans filed into the public gallery to show their support for Brown during the hearing. As he left the courtroom, the singer waved to his supporters before stopping outside to sign autographs for fans who were clutching photographs and merchandise.

The court has requested that Brown return for another hearing on April 27 as part of his ongoing bail requirements.
