Detective's Urgent Plea to Locate Suspect in Brutal Love Rival Murder
A murder detective has issued a fresh and urgent plea to the public to help trace a suspect believed to have fled to Turkey after mutilating and torturing his love rival to death in a horrific attack. Detective Chief Inspector Louise Metcalfe of Essex Police is appealing for any information that could lead to the whereabouts of Ceyhan Dinler, aged 38, who is suspected of the murder of Cumali Turhan in Chelmsford, Essex.
Gruesome Details of the November 2024 Attack
The court has been informed that Dinler fled the country in November 2024 after fatally stabbing Mr Turhan, aged 45, in the neck following a period of torture. The attack, which occurred on November 19, 2024, involved the victim having the tip of his tongue and part of his genitals cut off, with these body parts later dumped in a bin. Police evidence indicates that bruising on the base of the tongue suggests it was forced out and severed while Mr Turhan was still alive, highlighting the extreme brutality of the crime.
Detectives launched an extensive search, ultimately discovering Mr Turhan's body after a 47-day operation at a landfill site in Colchester. The victim's body had been callously disposed of in a bin, which was unknowingly collected by refuse workers and transported to the landfill, complicating the investigation.
Love Rivalry Motive and Public Appeals
The murder is believed to be the culmination of a simmering love rivalry, with Dinler allegedly discovering that Mr Turhan was in a secret relationship with his girlfriend. The two men were captured on CCTV having a heated discussion in The Globe pub in Chelmsford shortly before the murder, after Dinler had rung his target four times. They were seen shaking hands and leaving together, with Dinler then luring Mr Turhan to the Barista bar on Duke Street, just a minute's walk from the local police station.
CCTV footage did not show Mr Turhan leaving the bar, and police later found his blood on the ceiling and a bloody fingerprint belonging to Dinler on a table. In a recent appearance on BBC One's Crimewatch Live, Det Ch Insp Metcalfe emphasized the urgency of the case, stating, "We are appealing to the public to support us with any information they have to help secure justice for Cumali and his family." She added that they are working closely with the Crown Prosecution Service to ensure Dinler is located and questioned.
Reward and Previous Convictions
To aid the investigation, the independent charity Crimestoppers is offering a reward of up to £10,000 for information leading to the arrest of Ceyhan Dinler. Phil Breckton, eastern regional manager at Crimestoppers, assured that anyone providing information would be guaranteed total anonymity, saying, "If you contact our charity to tell us where Dinler is located, no-one will ever know."
In a related development, Ciprian Ilie, aged 44, was jailed for seven years in October after being found guilty of assisting in the suspected murder and preventing the decent burial of Mr Turhan's body by helping to place it in a bin. The case has been featured in a Channel 4 documentary, "Catching a Killer: Buried Truths," which aired CCTV footage of the moments before the murder, underscoring the ongoing public interest and need for resolution.
Mr Turhan, a father-of-two and Tottenham Hotspur fan, was a Turkish national whose family in both Turkey and the UK are desperate for answers and justice. The investigation remains active, with authorities determined to bring the perpetrator to court and provide closure for the grieving family.
