Exclusive new details have emerged about the recovery of 15-year-old Grace Keeling's body, following a tragic incident on the East Yorkshire coast that claimed three lives.
A Desperate Search Concludes
After an extensive search operation lasting nearly two weeks, the body of teenager Grace Keeling was finally located on Thursday, 15th January 2026. She was discovered amongst the large rocks used as coastal erosion barriers near Withernsea. The search was launched after Grace and her 45-year-old mother, Sarah Keeling, were swept into the sea by what has been described as a 'rogue' wave.
The discovery presented immediate challenges for the emergency services. The fire service initially struggled to reach Grace's body due to its precarious position. They then faced a race against the incoming high tide, which threatened to wash her remains away before they could be recovered.
A Solemn and Touching Recovery
In a poignant operation on Friday, 16th January, crews successfully reached Grace. She was then carried from the beach in a solemn procession by Coastguard teams. Approximately 40 emergency service personnel were on the scene, and a respectful silence fell as they watched the coastguard carry her body away.
To facilitate the removal, the fire service had to cut a hole in a fence bordering the beach. In a subsequent tribute, a police officer left flowers at the scene in memory of the teenager. Grace's funeral is expected to be held next month, alongside that of her mother.
Inquests Open into Triple Tragedy
Separate inquests into the deaths of Sarah Keeling and 67-year-old Mark Ratcliffe were opened and adjourned at Hull Coroner's Court on Monday morning, 19th January. Mr Ratcliffe, a passer-by, tragically lost his life while attempting to save Grace.
East Yorkshire area coroner Lorraine Harris outlined the preliminary causes of death. She stated that Sarah Keeling's primary cause of death was drowning, contributed to by head and neck injuries. Mark Ratcliffe also died from drowning, with chest injuries listed as a contributory factor.
Police investigations, which included reviewing CCTV footage, indicate that Grace and a friend were on steps near the rocks when it is believed she fell into the water after being struck by a wave. The incident serves as a devastating reminder of the powerful and unpredictable nature of the UK coastline.
