Historic Albury Sexual Assault Case Reopened with Chilling Crime Scene Photos

In a renewed effort to identify a sexual predator who has evaded capture for nearly two decades, police have released chilling photos of a crime scene dating back to the mid-2000s. The images are part of a fresh push to solve a series of alleged attacks on four women in and around the Albury Central Business District (CBD), a regional town situated on the border of New South Wales and Victoria.

Details of the Alleged Attacks

The incidents occurred between May 2005 and August 2006, with the victims reportedly assaulted while walking home alone, predominantly during nighttime hours. One of the women sustained significant injuries, including cuts, bruises, and abrasions, highlighting the violent nature of the assaults. The suspect is described as a Caucasian male who was in his 20s at the time, standing between 170 and 185 centimetres tall with a slim to medium build.

Technological Advancements and Fresh Information

On Friday, police released three photos that show key locations linked to the crimes: a partially open, rusty gate on a footbridge, a crime scene within the Albury Botanical Gardens, and an intersection in the CBD. These releases come after technological advancements enabled investigators to link several of the incidents, which had remained unresolved for nearly 20 years.

Strike Force Ranchby, the investigative unit handling the case, was reactivated in June following a tip from a caller to Crime Stoppers. This fresh information has provided new leads, prompting authorities to reopen the investigation into historic sexual assault, attempted sexual assault, and indecent assault cases.

Appeal to the Public

Superintendent Paul Smith has issued a public appeal, urging anyone with information—or individuals who may not have come forward at the time of the incidents—to contact Albury Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. The release of the crime scene photos aims to jog memories and encourage community assistance in identifying the perpetrator.

As the investigation continues, police remain hopeful that these efforts will finally bring justice to the victims and closure to a case that has haunted the Albury community for years.
