Husband Indicted for Wife's Murder Nearly Two Decades After Reporting Her Missing
In a dramatic development from a long-dormant investigation, Lucio Lerma Sr. has been arrested and formally charged with the murder of his wife, Delia Lerma, nearly fifteen years after he initially reported her disappearance to authorities. The St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office announced the indictment this week, marking a significant breakthrough in a case that had remained unsolved since December 2007.
A Disappearance and a Grisly Discovery
The sequence of events began on December 4, 2007, when 33-year-old Delia Lerma left her home on South Bendix Street in South Bend, Indiana. According to statements given at the time, she informed family members she was heading to Rosales Food Store on Western Avenue—a journey of merely one minute from her residence—and that she planned to meet a relative before returning promptly.
Her husband, Lucio Lerma Sr., relayed this same account to police when he filed a missing persons report just days later. However, the situation took a tragic turn on December 8, 2007, when officers, acting on a tip, located Delia's van on Carlisle Street. Inside the vehicle, they discovered her lifeless body; she had suffered multiple stab wounds.
A Cold Case Reopened with New Technology
Despite the grim discovery, no arrests were made in the immediate aftermath, and the investigation gradually went cold. For years, the case languished without resolution until South Bend Cold Case investigators decided to re-examine the evidence. Between March 16 and March 19, 2026, a grand jury reviewed multiple cases, including Delia Lerma's death, as part of a renewed effort.
Authorities have revealed that investigators applied new forensic technologies and meticulously re-examined existing evidence to generate fresh leads. While specific details about the evidence linking Lucio Lerma Sr. to the crime have not been disclosed publicly, the collaborative efforts proved fruitful.
Notably, the police department partnered with the television program Cold Justice during the summer of 2025. The show's crew spent several weeks working alongside detectives, and an episode highlighting the case aired in November 2025, potentially garnering public attention and new information.
Arrest and Legal Proceedings
On March 19, 2026, after reviewing all evidence and hearing testimony from multiple witnesses, the grand jury returned a true bill for murder against Lucio Lerma Sr. Prosecutors confirmed that he has been charged with murder in the death of his 33-year-old wife.
Lerma was arraigned before a St. Joseph County magistrate, where a judge ordered him to be held without bond in the St. Joseph County Jail. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 6, 2026, where further legal proceedings will unfold.
This arrest underscores the persistent efforts of law enforcement to solve cold cases, leveraging advancements in technology and media partnerships to bring long-awaited justice to victims and their families. The community now watches as the legal process moves forward, nearly two decades after Delia Lerma's life was tragically cut short.
